Anyone doing Atkins or low Carb?

Hi my name is Mary Kay and am using Atkins, just started and so far lost 14 pounds but more inportant is my blood sugar has gone from 294 to 142. I was so afraid this diet would be a struggle but its not been yet. Would sure like some friends along the way. I weigh 251 pounds so still have a long ways to go. This time I am in this for good, for my health I don't have a choice and my husband has started changing his eating habits also.

    Don't really specialise in Atkins diet but as far as low carb...
    If you still have a long way to your goal then just focus on your calories in versus calories out - low carb is more suited for those who only have a few pounds to go / those who are extremely sensitive to carb (very unlikely though)

    Started out at 252, now around 209. Low carb is a life style, not just for those with a few pounds. I am not exactly doing Adkins, but low carb. there are lots of us here. Am reading Adkins again just to remember what the doc said. Add me if you like, but you must be eating 1200 calories min. and have an open diary. Good luck to you.

    I'm doing the ketogenic diet, it has been working great for me (except for the last few weeks where I fell off the wagon!). Low carb works fantastically for me- I feel full, I have more energy and I don't crave like I did before. Time for me to get back on track! I'm about same weight as you so feel free to add me! :)

    I started low carb to help with weight loss but now I see it as a healthy lifestyle choice for me and my very fit family of 6 kids. Healthy proteins , veggies and some good fats are a yummy , nutritious way to stay fit.

    I've been able to lose about 110 pounds in 13 months and have 30-40 to go. Feel free to watch my diary and friend me.

    I like to stay around these totals :
    1200 calories
    20-40 good carbs
    1000-1500 sodium
    12-16 glasses of water
    Walk and do weight training alternating days

    Just try to take baby steps each week . I've learned more and more each day of my journey.

    It is definitely a lifestyle change! I've been eating Atkins/low-carb for going on 3 years, and I've never felt better! Feel free to friend me. Also, there are some groups here specifically for Atkins and low carb...just do a search. A nice little shelter from the nay-sayers and negative comments from people who have no idea what they're talking about.

    I'm not new to dieting but new to this site. I am not doing Atkins perse, but I am doing low carb. I try to stay around 80 grams a day. I was thin all my life, 125 lbs at 5'7" when I got married in 2001 but when I got pregnant, I had already reached 170 and by the time I had my second child, I had reached my highest weight of 273. That was June of 2011. I joined WW and for a while it worked really well. I lost 30 lbs in just a few months. But I had a tough Winter. Lots of stress. And I gained back 10 lbs and have been between 243 and 252 for a year and a half. So anyways, I joined this site because it has an app for my Kindle and WW doesn't. I haven't quit WW because that is where I weigh in and get support, but I added this to help at home. My first weigh in since joining is tomorrow night. Anyways, that's my story in a nutshell. All that was to say I've had a hard time loosing and I am hoping this low carb eating will help! Fee free to add me as a friend. I have 2 but I know them outside of the site. It would be nice to have more! :)

    I just found the Atkins Essential on my bookshelf and am thinking about incorporating it (somehow) into my diet journey, I need to jumpstart my loss and feel a boost. I was doing great and fell off the wagon after a small holiday binge and goodness! I can't seem to get back on track! Hoping a little Atkins might help me see some quick results for motivation.

    Feel free to add me. I have been on the Atkins since Mid-February and have lost about 28 lbs. In the past few weeks, I have began to introduce some low-carb recipes such as low carb-pizza, chilli, etc. back into my diet and with good results still.

    Did Atkins for two years, and a regular low calorie diet for two years. Lost the same amount of weight on both. So staying with the regular low calorie now.

    Hi All!

    I, as well, am doing low carb. I actually did a program through Lindora (a weight loss company) and it teaches low calorie, low carb, high protein with exercise as the method. I am now just incorporating what I learned to continue toward my goal. I have found that as long as I eat enough protein, I am not dreading losing the carbs as much. I still get them in and some days are harder than others but think I learned my body does not need over 100 carbs in a day or else it will hang on to the weight!!!

  • When it comes to weight loss, everyone and their mom will have a formula for you to follow. I would never recommend "Atkins" because most people do not follow the material the Doctor wrote. I think the Atkins diet is fairly unrealistic. As far as "Low Carb" is also a very vague description of a diet plan. A better plan might be to eat good nutrient rich food in the correct ratios of each other.

    If you want to keep it simple; (1) don't eat from a wrapper, a bag, or a box, (2) focus on veggies and meat, (3) don't rely on supplements for nutrients, (4) drink plenty of water, (5) plan and track your food using the tools on this site, (6) move your body (as we are not designed to be sedentary), (7) whatever you do do not starve yourself. (8) and NO fast food. Ever. It's garbage so don't do it.

    Being healthy is a process of daily choices. Enjoy the result that come from your daily decisions. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. You can do this!

    I am also doing low carb and have been for over 2 months now (this is my second go around with Low Carb) I feel so much healthier not eating all of those heavy foods that weigh you down and make you feel so sluggish. When you say "Atkins" Many people feel that you are pushing away fruit and vegetables and feasting on pounds of bacon, and therefore tell you it is very unhealthy. This is untrue, I keep my Carb intake at about 20 to 25 grams a day, and I eat healthy For breakfast I have veggie omelets and or frittatas. For lunch I have Grilled Chicken Salads with Walnuts, avocado and Cheese Olive Oil dressing with Balsamic. Dinner I have a plate full of Vegetables (Spinach, Broccoli, Zucchini, String beans etc........) with a piece of protein ( i do try to stick to leaner proteins and fish) and for dessert I have berries, watermelon or cantaloupe (lower carb fruits)

    The best thing about low carb diets is I do get those little treats such as real butter (much better then oil that looks like lard and tastes horrible.) Cheese and Whipped cream on my fruit, and yes occasionally Bacon :) . However, I do not have that full feeling where I feel as if my pants are going to pop off of me because I just ate my body weight in Pasta and bread. At the end of the day anything that turns to sugar in your body and where you can actually feel the weight being added is the less healthier diet. If you are getting negative feed back by saying you are on "Atkins" then my suggestion would be Don't take the advice of people who do not have to live with the outcome. Do what helps you and what you are comfortable with.

    I am doing at Atkins type thing again. I have tried weight watchers with no success. Low carb is really the only thing that I have been able to stick to for any length of time. I think it is because I can see the results so quickly that it motivates me. I also like being able to eat meat and cheese. I eat lots of salads and veggies, much more so than when I am not low carbing! MFP makes it so easy to track carbs. I love it!

  • Thanks everyone for your replys, I will stick with Atkins as my blood sugar is down from 297 to 126 and I have lost 18 pounds in less then two months. I am walking slowly but am walking for about a hour a day. I feel so much better, can't remember the last time I felt this good and i am sleeping at least 6 hours a night and thats good for me. Thanks for all our words of advice and wisdom.

    I've not read all these but if you want to reduce your blood sugar, look at low GI rather than atkins as it's probably more of a managable lifestyle change xx
  • I don't eat many carbs at all. No bread, no rice, no potatoes and the easy things that I know are carbs. I get my carbs from other foods and keep my level below 80 g/day. It has worked for me. Not sure if this is calorie reduction or just increasing protein keeps me full. I feel great.
  • I am just starting. I've always lost weight on it, but never stuck to it. I love carbs but they don't love me back. I have wicked hypoglycemia, so I NEED protein, so this should be ideal for me. My husband is a Type I diabetic, and he's been doing hardcore low carb for about 6 months. By hardcore, I mean protein shakes for breakfast, salads or Atkins meals for lunch, lean meat and vegies for dinner, and an Atkins bar for evening snack. Some days he doesn't have to take ANY insulin. You have no idea how incredible that is. Two years ago, he was hospitalized in DKA with a blood sugar reading of over 900. He has so much more energy and less symptoms from his diabetes. That's enough inspiration for me. I'm in! :happy:

    i've just recently started really restricting my carbs/wheat and experimenting with ketosis - i am super impressed with the weight loss and the lack of feeling icky and crampy after eating. the protein makes me feel great, no bloating, much less water retention - all in all fantastically positive results!

    Hello, I've been eating primal for about 3.5 months now, which is lower carb but not as extreme as Atkins (I eat between 50-100g of carbs per day). That's great your blood sugar is down, I've heard a lot of success coming from the diabetic and pre-diabetic crowd :smile: You can add me if you like, I log every day! :smile:

    I'm doing Atkins, I've been doing it for 35 days and I'm down 23 pounds! I'm doing great, feel great, no cravings so far. I'm eating less than 20 carbs per day. Send me a friend request...I'd love to keep in touch with you. I also have 100+ pounds to lose!

    Hi my name is Mia and Im also doing Atkins. I have went from 309 to 293 in two weeks from Atkins. I normally don't take in more than 15gm of carbs because im currently on induction.

    I'm trying to lower my carbs. It's not easy. It seems the lower I go on carbs the harder it is to reach my calorie goal. I already constantly have a huge deficit, I don't think that is a bad thing since I have so much weight to lose. But, I don't want to go under by a couple of thousand, when one thousand is a big enough deficit for me.

    I am doing better though. I am pretty sure I was eating over 200 grams of carbs. I am going under 150 now working toward 125ish and hope to get down to 100 in a month or two. It's going to take a lot of chipping away and a lot of creativity in how to replace those calories with protein and fats.

    Ummm...no. Low carb/moderate protein/high fat is well- suited to those who have many pounds to lose and those with metabolic disorders. I think metabolic disorders is what you meant by "extremely sensitive to carbs" but you lost me at the parenthetical "very unlikely though" it is, in fact, EXTREMELY likely that someone with a metabolic disorder (which would include insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS and more) is quite sensitive to carbs and would benefit from changing to a lower carb lifestyle.
