Pool work

I have stress fractures in my knee from working too hard in cycling class. Now I have to do pool work. Anyone do that and have any good tips for someone who wants cardio but is an awful swimmer??

Oh man. When I first saw this I was hoping you were wanting to open my pool in exchange for the vigorous cardio/circuit type workout it would give you. :frown:

Stress fractures from spin? Good god, woman! Take it easy! Swimming is like anything else, gets easier with practice. Good luck.

Swimming is great but it does help if you have reasonable technique. If you can't get any help from instructors at the pool see what you can find on you tube. Take it at a steady pace to start with as you will soon tire yourself out if your technique is not great.

spinning is what i do when i need to give my joints a break. if you're getting injured on a bike it's highly likely you're doing something wrong. or too frequently.

swimming should be good for you. and the good news is that if your technique is poor, you'll actually be burning more calories because of your inefficient form. that's my secret. that, plus not drowning. not drowning is a Good.
  • Thanks for the advice. :) I did go too frequently, and in my first week I was able to reach the gears and RPMs that the instructor wanted us to, as well as all the standing. I think it was the standing that did it. I am still quite heavy but I was determined, so I worked till I was sick each time. Then on top of that, I took a Pilates class and a class at the Y called CXWorx. I have been the largest person in the classes, but I work the hardest because as a large woman, I have to fight against my own body to do just the simplest moves.
Yea, not drowning is definitely a motivator :)
