Fine Dining.

Anyone got an experience of the sort of calories expected to be in a taster menu?

Anyone been and was bothered to find out or work it out? and if so how many courses did you have?

Just after a rough estimation really.

Well it all depends, really, is it a five course meal? Eight courses? Amuse? Is there a wine pairing? What's the main?

I would say at minimum you can bet on a full 2000 calories. My last five course with wine and amuse clocked in by my estimate at about 2300 calories.

    Worth every bite.

Maybe us peasants understand how ridiculous the question was. Seriously though, it would be pretty tough even if you actually linked the tasting menu here to look at. I'd give it a free pass for recording calories and carry on your life the next day. Generally wine is always served by the glass to accompany tasting menu's, portion size, ingredients are always more than printed on menu's...........have a good night and forgetaboutit.

Totally agree. I guestimated, but I am certain it was more than I guessed.

However that being said, going out for a very chic meal with wine pairings and fantastic company was just a lovely evening. Honestly paying that much for a meal, I didn't care what the calories were, I just wanted to enjoy it. I only logged for accountability and to remind myself why it's a treat!

    Knew that would work!!!!

It's a 7 course menu (a groupon special so it's by no means expensive lol)

    Here's a link to it http://lautrepied.livebookings.biz/menus/view/7079

Thanks for the replies, Fattyfoodie, I think I may just allocate 2000 calories for it and hope it's around that or under, I was after some sort of idea and you provided it, nice one.

Neanderathin, I won't be drinking wine, I'm off the booze for a while so it's purely going to be food.

Funny enough I did an extra workout today (Pure Cardio from Insanity) aswel as my usual kettlebell workout and will do my usual Kettlebell workout before I go.

I'm so close to the end of my battle so I'm really trying to be focussed for these last few weeks/months.

    Thank you, I will do.

I have but I can't understand bothering to calculate something special and that isn't going to happen all the time so I just go, eat, drink and party to my hearts content. I be careful and exercise a bit extra before and after and maybe cut back calories on a day or two before as well. You cannot really work it out so why not just relax for once?

dude just go by a huge guesstimate and log in whatever. Like I usually eat till i'm full and log in about 2500-4000 calories for the day if I'm going to a buffet. Its mainly to enter in the system that I ate way too much and had so many items and in different quantities that I can't possibly enter them

I'd just log it as a broad estimate quick add calories. In haute cuisine I'd be more concerned about the high sodium levels and would expect some water bloat the next day.

Yeah that's the plan, gonna allocate 150 cals per dish.

The last tasting course I had was 12 courses and estimated at 3700 calories. It was before I was logging, but even if it hadn't been, I wouldn't have logged it.

I wouldn't even worry about it. Treat it as a special occasion and don't fret about logging. Just enjoy.

If your going to something that fancy, Have fun for goodness sake!!!! 1 Night is not going to throw you off track. I'm going to Vegas for 8 days and I don't plan on logging the whole time. This is coming from someone who hasn't taken a more than 2 days off from logging in 3 years. There are times in your journey you need to just accept your going to have a few more calories than you normally do. Again, HAVE FUN!

Pretty sure only peasant tastings have 150 kcal or less dishes.

    I have been to a fine dining thing which consisted of;

    bread
fish.. testicles poached (taste amazing) under salad
    prawn egg based poached... thing
    beef tongue mushroom souffle thing
    sashimi plate inc. prawn
seafood based jelly in a cocktail glass
    small chocolate cake

and probably something else, the chef is Japanese (this was in a rich part of Tokyo) and did fusion with French cuisine. Can't even begin to describe the food haha!

I don't care what you think of it (I had a foodgasm) but I just want to highlight that it's pretty arbitrary to ask how many calories without a description of WHAT it is you are eating. Any more information?

edit: just saw you posted a link, my bad! have a nice evening anyway, seems you've already left

Tasting menus are to be savored and enjoyed for the their flavors and textures, not stressed over for their calories. If you find yourself running into a tasting menu once a week or so, then stress about it. Otherwise, enjoy what the chef can do and appreciate it for what it is.
  • It is probably a ton of calories as even if they say grilled or whatever, there is butter and cream etc. What you need to do is taste, not eat even if it is a small portion. You can just say that cream, butter and rich foods don't agree with you but you will try just a little. Don't drink to much as this leads to eating!!! That is what happens to me.

I have had mainly seven courses (Blanc, Ramsay, Kochhar, Kitchen) at evening tasting meals (five usually at lunchtime) with matched wine.

The courses are generally small and, of course perfectly formed but they don't hold back on all the good stuff (butter, cream, salt, fat etc). Its hard to know what sort of calories you are looking at as each cuisine (French, Italian, Indian, British etc) are put together in quite different ways. If you are really keen to try and work it out you could work out what was on each plate and guestimate, based on the values in the database.

But I'd say don't worry about the cals for one day and get back on track after. Maybe save a 100/200 cals a day for the three or four days before and do the same after and you won't go far wrong. Its only one meal after all.

    ENJOY IT!!

Not sure about that really, the portions were tiny and there was a lot of salad and fish involved, the worse thing that I could gather was a tiny square of Pork belly, it was a French restaurant and I found the dishes very light.

I'm guessing the Pork belly and desert dishes may have been more but the starter dishes were mainly salad, foam, mustard seeds, fish etc

There was very little meat involved although no doubt the calories came from what they were cooked in.

Like some have said, I'm not getting in a flap about it was more interested to see how bad they were, it was very nice and well worth this peasant tasting some of the finer things in life.

    PS. Groupon is class!!!!!
