Knee injury what can I do?

I started using my fitness pal and lost some weight a while back. Because of a bad attitude and a severe knee injury I gained it all back. Ready to start again. I am nearly 5 weeks post knee surgery. Physical therapist allows very little exercise. 10 minutes slow stationary bike time twice a week along with some very low impact daily work. I am sitting on my bum most of the time. Any ideas to burn calories while sitting would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Could you do upper body strength work outs, or even low impact workouts in the pool?

Sorry that you had to have surgery. Right now just go off of the docs recommendation and have the best attitude you can under circumstances. Starting in the pool would be a good way to kick things off. Just hurry up and be patient. I am joking I can imagine it as stressful to want to do a lot but not being able to. Good luck.

I agree with the recommendation of upper body strength work.

Prioritize pressing movements and rowing movements.

The bench press, overhead press, lat pulldown, seated row, etc would all be good things to start with.

All I will says is be careful with too much upper body work if you need crutches still! I definitely leant that the hard way.

It's not a bad thing to just focus on the physio exercises, you'll get more things to do soon and heal!

    Hey there-

I am also plagued by severe knee problems, and it's such a catch 22 in trying to exercise and lose weight, but not hurt your knee. I had my 5th knee surgery in December, and have my final PT session tomorrow. I am still unable ti jump or do any impact things . . .i walk, ride the bike, and take a water aerobics class. I have even been able to do the zumba dvd's with modifications like not bouncing.

    Good luck!

I sprained my foot yesterday from overdoing plyometrics, and I was really disappointed that I couldn't do my regular workout today. I used this video to get some ideas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIp65nkJLRU It's basically an upper body cardio workout that you can do in bed. I hope you have a fast recovery!

I'm in the same predicament. I find that the elliptical is wonderful and I can break a sweat with no impact whatsoever on my knee. Bike riding has helped and I find that I have to be vigilant about my food more than ever.

Maybe you could start doing some upper body weight lifting exercises. Should be safe as it entirely doesn't involve the knee.

Weight lifting exercises burn calories and build muscle which consumes more calories.

As to other exercises with a (serious) knee injury.. I am not sure. I slightly injured my knee one time and found biking made it worse actually. Walking (running in my case) made it feel better. So is walking an option at all?
