Lifting for Dummies

Now that I will be having some time on my hands, I really want to focus on my transformation with strength training. Cardio is cardio. I know how to get that in.
I need to work on my core and want to know a little bit more about lifting; especially for beginners. I used to lift when I was in my younger 20s but 15 years later, I don't remember what regimen I did!
Can anyone help me out? Give me some ideas on where to begin, what to focus on, how much/reps? A guide would be great.

Visit the website simply shredded, they have a 12 wk program for women. I am in my 10th week. With cardio and clean eating and that lifting program I am down 24 lbs and 2 pant sizes.0
