Best place to buy barbells and plates?

I've been doing LesMills BodyPump but hitting a bit of a wall because there's only one class I can go to with the gym's schedule. They have more classes but they're usually at an inconvenient time. I figured I'd buy a barbell and some plates and do it at home so I can work it around my schedule instead.

What's the best place? I usually buy things on amazon because it's convenient (and I get gift cards all the time), but I'm confused by what they're offering, and there isn't much. I know that Beachbody sells the LesMills program too but it only comes with 5 and 10lbs weights (I'm still pretty new and just moved up to 5lbs plates last week end, but not on all the exercises), and I'm not sure I really need the DVDs... but so far it seems like the best bet. Just not sure what I'll do when I go past that... but again it's going to be a long time before I do, I'm guessing.

Advice? I'll still go to the gym either way.

Craigslist, local swaps and garage sales are great. I've found quite a few things that way. Otherwise I've bought the plates I needed at ****'s Sporting Goods. $ .99 a lb is what they charge. Just to give an idea what new costs so you don't overpay for used.

    Used.

I got 500+lbs of decent quality plates for 60c/lb.

Remember to weigh them and pair them. Inexpensive plates are rarely accurate.

For new stuff, i buy from Rogue.
I have 2 of their barbells (Beater and Rippetoe bar) and some bumper plates.

I highly recommend the PUMP program. You can order additional plates. I have an extra set of 5s and 10s and also got the 2.5s. It is an awesome program! If you aren't interested in the DVDs then the sporting goods stores should have bars and plates.

    Ha! Nice

anyways I just bought this rack yesterday: ....Came with a barbell, clamps, 300 lbs of weight and a bench and I spent about $1100. I would suggest just buying new, but that's me. If you don't want to buy new craigslist should be a good bet to look.

where are you located? Ocean State Job Lot (they have several stores throughout New England) have an ok selection (its kinda hit or miss) and the prices are decent.

Craigslist. I just scored an olympic barbell, a standard barbell, an olympic curl barbell, two dumbbell handles, a weight tree, a weight bench, 279 lbs of olympic weight plates and 125 lbs of standard weight plates for $150. Figured that's probably about $1000 new.

There's also places like play it again sports around here that sell used equipment, you can get decent deals there sometimes.

Craigslist sucks here, I checked. I might just do the pump program once I figure out how to get more plates.

Craigslist can vary. If you aren't in a big hurry then there probably will be a deal on there eventually. You could also try looking at surrounding areas, a couple hour drive to save a few hundred bucks is worth it to me.

was just introduced to the rogue website. i'm definetly getting a rogue bar.

i was going to go the craigslist route, but the bar at least i'm going to buy new.

was thinking of the beater bar, but then saw people complaining about the larger diameter. then i read the regular rouge bar is what they use in crossfit comps so i think i might just spring for that.

idk, i guess there are many bars out there that will do what i want. but i really plan on using it for many years so spending an extra 100 or even 200 might not be so terrible.

I use the beater bar almost exclusively for deadlifts. I LOVE it for deadlifts. It's not -that- much bigger around. I got it so my wife and I could lift at the same time.

For just one bar, would highly, highly recommend the Rippetoe Bar. It's amazing.
Obviously you can't go wrong with the Rogue bar either!

Get a decent bar, decent rack, decent bumpers. Get your iron plates on the cheap.

But for that to be relevant, you'd need a decent program. Les Mills encourages crap technique, learn to lift properly then decide if it's still for you.

    CraigsList....

Lot's of people buy this stuff, never use it, then sell it relatively cheap.

I didn't see the rippetoe on the website, so i assume its no longer offered. but i'll double check. also looking at the mens econo bar.

i'm sure the OP will be much better off listening to an anonymous internet post then following a program that a multimillion dollar company spent thousands testing and producing.
