New, confused and really don't know what to do?

Hi,
I'm new to this site.. I came across it while searching "way's to lose weight" on Google and this site was one of the sites that came up. I'm really confused on what this site has to offer but if it'll help me lose the 53kg I need to drop. Then I'll be happy.
My names Kaylee and I'm 18. I've always be overweight but now I'm classed as obese and I don't like it. I've got a boyfriend, who's more then half my weight and it embarrasses me to go out with him and/or his mates cause of my size. I have no confidence, mates or happiness anymore.

Hi Kaylee
Welcome to MFP. You will find many inspirational stories on here, and a good bunch of folk [with the odd troll of course]
One of the big plus for this site I found is the food data base, which will automatiallly count your daily calories for you, most foods are in there
You will need to weigh & log it all, it sounds tedious but after a while you will find it second nature, and soon realise what a sensible portion is, and how seemingly innocent food, like cheese, whilst healthy are loaded with calories for a small portion
I started out obese as well, it was a pleasure to be just "overweight". I hope to in healthy BMI this week or next
Good luck0 -

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah been looking at the story's section, seems amazing but the site still confusing me lol.
Awesome, think I need that because I over-eat. Maybe thats the reason I gained weight lol.
Ah okay and thank you.
Well done on your lost and good luck with the BMI0 -
Hi Kaylee my name is Aletha, I just started MFP last week because a friend told me about it and I know that people who keep a food diary tend to lose more. In just one week I have lost 7 lbs, I feel more knowledgeable about what is in my food and I am quickly learning to cut calories and sodium in my diet. The good thing is the longer you use MFP the more you will know about all the food you eat, the more you see WOW, that wasn't good, or ok that was good. It's a great tool. And personally now that I have started walking and working out it's instant gratification when I get done and log my workout and it tells me how many calories I burned:) Hope you enjoy it as much as I have and good luck, feel free to add me as a friend if you would like so we can cheer each other on!0

You're in the right place! Get friends (add me if you like) log what you eat and your exercise. It will guide you to your healthy self, and the community and forums will give you info and support. I've tried everything, and this is the only thing that helped be a size I haven't seen in 20 years. If you really want t, it's all here.0

Hi Aletha, its most likely going to take me a while to work out how to add you! New to this lol. But well done on the 7 lbs! Hope that can be me too. Awesome, I cant wait to get started now!0 -

Once I worked out how to add people, I'll add you lol! Yeah, I've seen the food and exercise tab.. will take me a while to get the hang of this. Wow, thats just awesome! I've came across to many shams in my search for weight lost help or its something you got to pay for. But this is free isn't it?0 -
Welcome to MFP! You've made the first step to a new lifestyle
As others have said, the website has a huge range of nutritional information about all kinds of foods and beverages. This allows you to plan ahead, but also work something out "on the go" - assuming you have a smartphone (Android/iPhone) - there is a really handy app you can download for free that syncs with your profile and you can also barcode scan an item and add it to your diary.
You also have the chance to log exercise - there are a lot of different types that all count towards something so don't forget to log it! Some people do not rely entirely on the calories they give out, but it gives you a good idea, and also good to track progress.
First of all though, you need to set up your statistics such as weight, height and age, plus your activity level on an average day. This will help MFP calculate a calorie goal for you to hit each day, as well as other goals such as sugar levels/protein/carbs.
Good luck, and feel free to add me as a friend0 -
Yes - this site is free. The best piece of advice I got was to log everything - what you eat and your exercise. Once you get started get the hang of it. Are you using the website or a smartphone/device? I use both - I find the web site good for following message boards and I like using my phone to log my exercises and my food.0

Thank you and I have a blackberry, don't know if they have an app for them? Also kinda been looking at the website, getting the hang of it.. sorta lol.
Yeah I entered my details and it set the calorie thing up. Thats how much I'm aloud to eat right?0 -
It's free, they do hope you may buy from the ads, but not shoved in your face0

First rule of MFP log everything. Even if you think it's bad.
I have a few suggestions of my own. I had no idea what I was doing either so... anyways.
I started out in October about 6 months before I found this site. I started adding more fiber to my diet only I called it eating more vegetables and a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. After about two weeks I started feeling better. But, it was kind of a rough two weeks adding fiber can have consequences, Still I was really happy I did that because I felt like I had a lot more energy.
Then I started a journal. I wasn't logging my food at first, I was just writing down how I felt and how that affected what I ate and how that effected other things. I was writing about the days events. And then it morphed into me writing down what I was eating and writing down the recipes that I had enjoyed. It really helped me pin point problem areas and when to know to seek professional help which was just a couple months ago, turned out I have several health issues that could be a barrier to losing weight so I am getting those problems addressed.
If you can see a doctor do so. It's always good to have your blood worked up so you know if you are dealing with things like high cholesterol, diabetes, low metabolism etc... It might suck to be on medication at such a young age. But, it would be a lot worse to let the problems fester for a long time. Plus if you get treated now for any problems like that and you lose weight and eat better foods for your body, you will most likely not need medication for a long time, just long enough to get you to a healthy place.
Logging food and exercise is important for the same reasons. It helps you identify what works for you and what doesn't. If like many people you think cutting calories down to barely any will make you lose weight faster, this will show you in a hurry that doesn't work and that cutting calories by just 500 or so works best coupled with adding a 500 calorie burn or so. You will lose weight at a pretty good clip enough to be encouraging. But, not so fast that the mental adjustment is difficult, plus there is less a possibility of things like loose skin.
It isn't a sprint, it's a marathon.
Don't give up.
Figure out what foods you absolutely don't want to give up and figure out how to work them into your eating plan. And figure out what is easy to give up. For me what was easy to give up was pastries and things like that, plus fried foods. What I absolutely have to have is pasta, I switched to whole grain.
Did I mention don't give up? That and don't be in a hurry. The biggest mistake people make is trying to change everything at once. Then when they mess up one thing they give up. Make changes slowly but firmly I guess. Like you decide you are going to walk at least 3 times a week. Stick to that really really stick to that. But, don't throw out everything you like food wise, make those changes methodically.
It's going to seem like it takes a long time to get there. Mostly cuz it will take a bit of time to get there. But, it's always better to cross the finish line late than never cross it at all. .0 -
Welcome!
I started on this journey about a year ago now, and have lost 78 lbs to date. I look and feel completely different. You came to the right place.
My advice would be to start with the basics - how many calories you should be eating per day. You can get very easily overwhelmed with some of the detailed information on here about the "perfect" balanced diet, but really as a starting point, I would focus less on this, and more on portion control. You'll see quick results in the first few weeks if you stick to that.
For my first couple months, this was all I did. Once I started feeling better and had more energy, exercise became very important. MFP is great because it can approximate calories from exercise, and help you figure out how much more you can/should eat as a result.
The people on here are great. A lot of other blog/forums are filled with jerks. That's not at all the case here - we're here to support and help you in whatever adjustments or changes you want to make. Just always remember - your worth is based on so much more than your appearance. Don't let the mirror make you dislike yourself. Like you for you - your boyfriend, your friends, and the new friends here all value you for who you are.0 -
Hey girl, welcome to MFP! The site has so much to offer.. from supportive friends, to places to get your questions answered to finding someone who happens to be in the same situation who you can relate to and draw motivation from. Logging food will help you to hold yourself countable for what you are eating and really help you get a feel for where you need to make changes. Feel free to add me if you'd like a new friend!0

Welcome!
I like to keep it simple, eat less move more! Eat good food, if you can't understand the ingredients don't eat it! Only drink water Find someone to workout with or an activity that you find fun. Set a small goal, break it then set another!0 -

Wow! Just wow! 78 lbs! I've got to lose that + more and it seems impossible. But if you can do it? So can I right?!
Yeah.. I'm just following what the site tells me to do and my boyfriend has an exercise bike. I'm sure he'd let me use it daily?
I just feel so fat and ugly, to be honest? I isolated myself from everybody, thats why I don't have friends and I met my boyfriend via a dating wesbite.0 -

Absolutely - If I can do it, anyone can. I ran 12.1 miles in a relay on Sunday, at an 8 minute/mile pace . . . I never thought I would be able to say that. And it's been less than one year. As others say, this process is a marathon, not a sprint - but if you keep moving forward, you'll look back in months/years from now and say "whoa."
Another bit of advice that I agree with - eat your calories every day. This is important, because if you feel like you're starving, you're more likely to binge and/or give up. Don't look at this as a temporary diet - look at it as a permanent lifestyle change. So don't cut out things you love (like chocolate or cookies for me) because it's tough to cope with the idea of NEVER having them again. Just have 1-2 instead of 5-10, and make sure you exercise enough or have enough calories left today to make up for it.
I didn't like the way I looked, either - I still wish I had more hair, but that's not as easy to deal with. I digress . . . if people judge you just on your appearance, you'd call them a superficial jerk, right? Don't accept that treatment from yourself if you wouldn't accept others treating people that way.
You can do this!0 -

Ah, so I don't have to chuck out peperami sticks? I love them lol.
Ah okay and thank you.
I try not to accept it from myself but I can't help it.
Also thank you.0 -

Welcome!
Of course this seems overwhelming at first! It might be helpful to break things down into smaller goals to work on one at a time. First, find your daily calorie goal. Track EVERYTHING you eat. Track the last few days to see where your old eating habits landed in terms of calories, and then work on swapping things out.
Over time, work on adding more fruits and veggies, less salt/sugar/fat, less processed carbs, etc. Add in activity (walking is a good place to start). You do not have to do all of this starting day one. Build up your good habits and you will develop lifelong healthy skills. I wish I had started when I was 18! And yes, you can still have your favorite treats, just maybe not as often as you used to.
Most of all, be kind to yourself. You are too young to feel hopeless. You have everything in your hands to make some really great changes. You are so much more than your weight/appearance.
Good luck! This is about making progress, not perfection. You'll still have good days and bad days, but keep moving forward.0
