I have recently started a program to lift heavy. She recommends that I take a protein shake after. What do you think? What protein powder do you recommend and how do you make it?

I have a protein shake as soon as I get home from lifting. I use body fortress vanilla cream flavor, blend it with about a half a cup of ice, half a cup of frozen strawberries and a cup of almond milk. I like it thick enough that its like ice cream!
  • I always bring a protein shake bottle to the gym with me with one scoop of ISO protein powder in it. After a workout I add some water. Shake and down it. Sweet and simple.

Worry less about when you get your protein and more about getting sufficient protein in your daily diet. If you can get it from regular food, that much better, but if not use a protein shake. PIck a protein powder that tastes good and generally fits within your calorie allowance. Ignore the hype.

    Absolutely this^

The only reason I use protein powder is to help me meet my protein macro.

Oh ok thanks! I've always wondered the true need of a protein powder!

Beachiron is right...However, after a hard workout sometimes the last thing I want to do is chow down on a bunch of meat or eggs. That's when protein powder is handy.

I used isopure whey (100) originally, now turning to vegan protein powder. Try Plant Fusion or Sunwarrior protein powder (warrior blend-Vanilla is my favorite)

It's not needed per say but it does help me hit my protein macro. If I spent more time cooking then I wouldn't need it but for me a grab and go shake is super easy - wether it's after the gym or for breakfast or whenever.

Edit: I love Isopure! Great for shakes, mixes well in yogurt, and even taste good with just plain water.

I find it hard to meet my macros without powder,I'm a vegetarian and like that it is quick and easy to have a shake.
I use optimum nutrition 100% whey. Flavours are pretty good. Just add a scoop with some milk. Have one after lifting or to meet macros. Blender ball is good for mixing.

I agree with this in the main.

However, if you really want to consume something post workout and are not generally in a fed state prior to working out then a mixture of carbs and protein is a good idea. Protein starts protein synthesis but carbs prevent protein breakdown (so protects against the body converting amino acids into glucose to restabilise blood sugar levels after working out.)

I'm in this boat too, I feel the need for nutrients after a workout, but am not in the mood to cook or even really eat. So I tend to make my shake more of a smoothie/meal; protein powder, maybe milk, Greek yogurt, and frozen fruit, and sometimes depending on where my calorie needs are, I'll even add some peanut butter.

I don't worry about getting protein right after my workout but when I do finally have breakfast I do try and make sure it has a good mix of carbs & protein. I also try and make sure I get enough during the day which does typically include a serving of powder in there somewhere.
