Why am i not losing weight

Hello Everyone.
I started MFP on April 13, 2013.
I started at 182.
Almost 2 weeks later, i am only down 2 pounds to 180.
I am staying in my 1200 Calorie allowance.
I admit i haven't been excersing as much, but the last two days, i have started to.
Is it normal for the weight to come off so slow.
My goal is to lose 40 pounds.
In the alst 3 years, i have gained 60 pounds. Many life events helped that happen, but wont' get into them.
I am in a good place now, and i believe I can do this.
Any encouragement or suggestions would be really appreciated.

A little bit about myself to help you understand me a bit.

37 years old.
Married, mother of two boys 10 and 7
Work Full time Monday to Friday
2 children with very active sports schedules
I am also a volunteer for various sports programs for my kids

Thank you everyone.
B.

Always remember why you started and stay strong!

2 pounds in two weeks is actually really good. It's a great pace.

Be patient. If you try to lose weight too quickly, it's only going to come back quicker and more.
  • Thank you Illona88. I appreciate your resopnse. so 2 pounds is a good thing. Good to know.
    I will be patient. :)

    Thank you kindly,

    B.

Losing weight is a process. It won't happen overnight. Like the previous poster said, 1 pound per week is actually a good rate of loss. You can do this!! You just need to be patient and give it time.

Also, you should be eating more than 1200 calories per day.

I don't usually jump on these threads because I'm no expert and I also have some odd eating habits that probably wouldn't be entertained by other people, but I had to respond to this.

I'm 5' 7" and started at 181lbs. My calorie budget is 1400 or so, and I am extraordinarily sedentary. I can't understand why you'd get that.

    Stick with it!

There are many weeks that I don't lose anything at all, or that I lose less the a pound. But then I'll have a week where I'll drop 2 or 3 lbs. Over the past 12 weeks, I've lost 20 lbs, which averages to about 1.6 per week.

It takes time. Weight doesn't get put on overnight and it won't come off overnight. What kind of foods are you eating? You should open your diary up. Are you guesstimating your food or are you measuring it. I'd also probably say that you aren't eating enough. MFP tends to put you at the bare minimum. Eating more calories of the right foods makes a huge difference.

But definitely stick with it. Also, make sure you are taking measurements. Inches lost say a lot more than the scale does.
  • Thanks Everyone.
    I appreciate your posts.
    I will take yoru advice.

Great work by you all by the way.

you've lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks. it took you 3 years to gain 60 pounds. you're doing great! will it take you 3 years to loose the 60 probably not just keep in mind it took 3 YEARS to gain it so it's not going to come off overnight or in a month.

you're doing great. stick with it and you'll see results. remember to eat back your exercise calories (you don't want to go below 1200 AFTER exercising). :)

2 pound in two is a great progress. the slowly and healthy you go, the more you keep off the weight you lose.
everything in life takes time, and losing weight takes time too..:)
I wish you good luck.. don't give up and keep it up...

You ARE losing weight - you say so right in your post. Stop expecting unrealistic results - you're doing great.
  • Thanks so much. I will make sure. :)

I am guessing the OP is eating 1200 cals a day because she set her MFP goal for a 2 lb/week loss.

That's not a good idea for someone who doesn't have that much weight to lose; you can only realistically expect 1 lb a week at this point. Eat more and you'll see better results:

  • Thank you....i remind myself everyday...it's a struggle sometimes, but i'm starting to feel good about this, and finding time to exercise. :)
    Thanks for the encouragement.

Going through the same mental block about not seeing the loss every day. I hop on the scale - and I know I shouldn't - but hope each morning that I see a loss. The first week one pound, a few days later two more! Then a few days later those two pounds came right back. As of today, three weeks later, I'm down a grand total of 3.3 lbs from where I started. I absolutely believe those on this site who recommend getting on the scale no more than once every week or two, but it's a tough thing to do. I'm 5' 4" and need to lose 20 lbs or so, which by all I've read isn't so much, so I guess it just has to go slowly.
  • i understand. i get on the scale every morning. ugh!!! lol.
i have 40 pounds to go.
you can do it and so can I.

it's not easy, but it's worth it. :)

Play around on the forums here, read the sticky notes in each topic, and use the search option to see if there are opinions about quesstions that you already have. Do your own research from reliable sources. It takes time, don't get discouraged, when you hit a road block reevaluate what is working and what isn't and move on. Give any change at least 4 weeks to make an impact.
