I DONT WANT TO EAT PESTICIDES!!!

So, I have a nice size back yard, pool, spa, grass, planters, etc... Needless to say, with 5 kids, we are outside ALOT!!! I decided that since im out there all the time, I should clear one of my above ground flower beds, and create my own food garden, to keep me busy while the kids swim and play. I have never done this before, however, I really want to do it, since store bough fruit and veggies have alot of pesticides found on them, even after washing.
The area I cleared out is about 100+ feet long, and about 3 feet wide...
So, heres my question...
How do I even get started? Do I buy new soil, mulch? use regular dirt?
Do certain fruits and veggies grow easier than others? Should I start out with easier things until I get the hang of it?
How do I keep bugs away without using pesticides?
Should there be an "order" to how things are planted?
