Anyone have surgery (hernia) during weight loss?

Just wondering if anyone had to have surgery part way through their journey & still managed to maintain or lose during recovery? I have a umbilical hernia as a result of obv my weight & my gall bladder surgery I had last year. I haven't had any issues with it the past few months but today it hurt alot & my surgeon told me if it flairs up again its going to have to be repaired. I really would rather not have to go into the hospital for even a day procedure at this stage, I am only 11wks in but I have 34lbs gone & REALLY don't anything to mess it up. I am on a good path, have no issues staying on track & am afraid that if I have to get this repaired it will hurt my progress. When I had my gall bladder out last yr I was in the hosp for 4 days (it was too bad to send me home but they couldn't fit me in til day 4), I was on iv fluids only the entire time bc they wanted me ready to go at a moments notice, by the time I came home I had lost some weight. But not sure this would happen again as its pretty much a day thing.

Obv my health is important so if needed I will have the surgery but just curious how anyone else's progress might have been affected if any at all?

I had hernia repair surgery a year ago. It was day surgery. I was down (limited mobility) for about two weeks and no heavy lifting for six weeks. It didn't affect my progress, I still managed to meet my weight loss goal for the year.

If you decide to go ahead with surgery keep in mind that surgery is a controlled injury to your body. Your body needs the calories to heal the wound. Post surgery is not a time to restrict calories. You can get back on track once you have fully recovered.

I had an umbilical hernia fixed in December-I've had it since pregnancy with my 12 year old. I was doing light cardio a week later and as bigguy47 said I couldn't lift weighs over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. My goal was not to lose during this time, just not to gain. My body required a lot more sleep than usual so be prepared to give your body what it needs to repair itself, lots of sleep and great nutrition! As soon as those 6 weeks were up I was lifting again with no problem-granted it took a few weeks to get back to the weights I was using prior to surgery. I felt ready and healthy enough to lift at about 4 weeks but waited out the 6 weeks just to follow the doctor's orders and be sure everything had healed well enough to withstand lifting heavy weights. So glad I did it! Good luck!

Thank you that is what I was hoping to hear, I am already on weight lifting restrictions so as not to made it flair up so that part is normal & when I had my gall bladder out last yr I also couldn't lift for 6wks so I just wanted to be sure if I kept with my usual calories I would be ok. I wonder how long it would be before I could use my elliptical again :-)

I had a colon resection last October, basically it was a wash weight loss wise for about a month. I was in the hospital for a week and on a liquid diet after surgery, but had swelling and fluid retention, then I had about 3-4 weeks post op where I had to really watch what I ate due to the restrictions I had on types of food after my surgery but I did start walking right after surgery, very short distances at first but each day a little more, very good for surgery healing, they will get you up and walking right after surgery in the hospital. At 8 weeks I started up with my personal trainer and we could do a lot of strength training, walking, light jogging etc just did not any hard core abs til about 3 months post surgery. My surgery was laproscopic which also helped witht eh healing time. SO my best advice is not worry about weight loss during the surgery process but really concentrate on eating healthy foods and moving, both which will help you heal.
