Has anyone tried the 5:2 diet?

I tend to have days where I can stick to 1200 calories or thereabouts, but then days where I really struggle.
My friend told me about the 5:2 diet, where you have 500 calories (women, 600 for men) for two non-consecutive days per week and then eat normally (obviously not bingeing) for the other 5 days.
Having 500 calories on non-consecutive days does not harm the body as it actually goes into repair mode and the body does not get the famine trigger. This is what was stated in the articles I've read so far.
Just wondering if anyone has tried it/is currently doing it?
