Exercise Bar

Has anyone had success with muscle toning using the Tony Little exercise bar and video? I need to tighten up a lot and would like to invest in this product if it works. I know it only works if you use it, but would like to have my MFP opinions before I invest in it. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I have not tried it . The best exercises to tone up, in my opinion, are done with 5 pound hand weights. The original Weight Watchers Shape up DVD is fantastic for toning and easy on the joints. I get the arm(batwing) exercises from the internet for free. Some of the other workout DVD's like Leslie Sansone and Jillian Michaels hurt my back and knees. Let me know what you find out please!

Your handbag probably weighs more than 5lbs. Low weights like this do practically nothing to 'tone you up'. You need to go heavy, less reps. I'm not talking injury inducing heavy. Just heavy enough to make the final 2 reps of what your doing HARD!

SexyMT, you are a younger more fit looking woman and your advise applies to someone like you. Heavy is relative to your fitness level. This 71 year old woman who retired from a desk job 18 years ago is definitely not fit as you are. She may have to tone up for weeks or months with very light (for you) weights, or maybe no weights at all before she advances to what is heavy for her and still too light for you.

Exactly what Sexymuffintop said. Here's my take on it, just in my own words. Lost the same 50 pounds so many times I lost count. The last time was in February of 2010. Unfortunately, this time my skin didn't bounce back. I was exercising during this time but had loose skin above my knees, my arms etc. Logic told me that the only thing to do at my age, which is 56 now, was to fill in that loose skin with muscle. I started lifting in October and the results have been amazing. My arms don't jiggle and the knees are good now. Start slow and challenge yourself. You can do more than you realize. Good luck!

Yes but my point stands. a 5lb weight is nothing. Are you honestly telling me that this lady lifts nothing heavier than a 5lb weight several times a day? Hence my statement, saying NOT INJURY INDUCING HEAVY! I'm not suggesting she uses anything like what I would weight wise. That's just silly, I'm just saying challange yourself Work the muscle, don't just tease it. Age is just a number, I think you are a bit rude to presume shes a weak woman because of her age. She could be as strong as you and me, you are just judging from a profile snap shot.

I actually read this lady';s profile and she says:
    "About Me
Retired 1995 from a desk job. Love to travel, take pictures, eat good food, but not overly fond of exercise. "

I did not presume anything. You have no idea of what rude is, but if you want to find out look within yourself and all of the presumptions you made in your last paragraph.

Yep I read it as well. I don't know what your problem is man, you are a bit angry? Are you eating enough? I'm just trying to give the lady a bit of advice, which as far as I can tell you haven't done? Do you have any help to give the OP or did you just come on here to pick a fight with a random girl on the internet?

Random Girl, you are really funny! You do not seem to understand what you read. You seem to be the person with a chip on her shoulder. You tried to start an argument with two people on this thread alone. The OP and I are of the same generation, so I think I have a better understanding of what she is asking than you. She and I were most likely listening to the radio when Elvis sang "You Ain't Nuthin' But A hound Dog" the first time. I doubt you even existed at the time. Have a nice life & try and find some satisfaction in it.

You can make your own weight bars with a dowel rod tape and water jugs.. I know a lot of people can afford to just buy equipment, but you can adjust the weight by using different substances like sand / gravel instead of water.

Let's be real here. A gallon of water weighs 8 pounds. Milk, moreso due to the sugars.

5 pounds is nothing, not even enough to be considered resistance for functional strength.

Hell, one of my iron pans is 12 pounds.

That's fascinating...and again, my question is:

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR THE OP???

Thats what this thread is about. Oh and by the way I did message the OP privately, she appears to have no problem with my comments, so it's just you....yep just you. Disagreeing with advice given is NOT starting an argument. I am saying that high reps with A 5LB weight won't help the OP 'tone'. Seriuosly, lets not derail the thread, it's not on. Give the OP some helpful advice or just leave. Walk out the door, don't turn around now, your not wanted any more. Thats more my generation. See what I did there? Oh and no chip here, you were mean to me and I still like you, I'm nice like that you see......
  • I agree with sexymuffintop. Don't sell your journey short with weights that will do nothing for your body composition. Get the exercise form down. When you are doing your reps, you want it to become difficult the last few reps in your set. Not impossible but difficult. And it does not matter your age when it comes to lifting weights.
