Good question - I've wondered the same thing in the past. Generally, I think they have to be calibrated before they are fit for use, but whether that is done is another matter. They usually mirror my home scales pretty well - maybe a lb out, but then I'm wearing clothes in Boots (although, it has been less than home scales at times). I suppose my best advice is to weight yourself at three different places at the same (ish) time - home, doctors and somewhere like Boots - that way if two are similar and third is wildly out, you know not to credit it. My home scales are always a lb or two more than the Boots (apart from today) and the doctors, but they are all around the same.
Obviously weighing yourself in the same clothes at the same time of day is best.0
