HRM for Swimming

Anyone have any luck? I have been researching and keep running into disappointments. Is the technology just not there yet? I really would like to know what my heart is doing when I am huffing and puffing, lap after lap. The calorie burn data on swimming is all over the place. and I know, everyone swims differently so that makes sense. I just want a better idea of what I am doing.

I have a polar t4 ( I think) and It works well for my swimming. I swim weekly sometimes twice a week depending. I tend to notice my heart rate doesnt get as high as other cardio unless I really hit it. So If I notice it dropping into the 120s or so I jump in the water for a few before beginning my laps again. I also noticed that If I do the flipturns at the end of my laps, I tend to be able to keep it up there in th 140s 150s pretty easily.
