Another Heart Rate Monitor Question.

I purchased a heart rate monitor with chest strap to get a better reading on my workouts. To my disappointment , I found out that if you are near a TV it can lose it's signal. My workout space is small, so I have issues. Back to my wrist watch HRM , and being bothered by checking my HR during my workout.

Anyway, it works, really great for outdoor things such as walking, but............I went hiking with almost a 40lb pack. It was a Mountain conditioning hike, so it was slow & steady , 5 hours straight with an ascent of 3360. Pretty intense day.

I checked 2 websites , and it estimated calories burned in the 2000 range. My HRM said 1300 range.

My question is, should I add the weight of my pack on my HRM? I would think so, but would like some input. I'm pretty sure I burned more calories than 1300. We went up hill for a good 3.5 hours before heading down.

I wouldnt... I'm not a hiker but if you were using your HRM with a chest strap it calculated the amount of calories burned on the intensity of the hike based on your heart rate... you wouldnt have burned as many calories without the extra 40 pounds.

Ya. I called a gym and talked to a Personal Trainer. But I is possible that I would burn more calories without the large pack, only because I'm going faster.
