Casual Dining at a Friends

How do all of you track what you eat when you go to dinner at a friends home? Often the home recipe dinners are not something I can find here. Do you just find something that best describes what you were served and go with it?

That's what I do. I do my best at a guesstimate or something similar and then go from there.

I just try to find something similar in the database and estimate from there. I figure sometimes I'll be a little higher, sometimes a little lower, so it will even out. I would probably also try to make sure I worked out that day just in case I'm way off!

I usually get there several hours before hand and make sure that they are cooking everything as minimally processed as possible. After that I copy the ingredients and create a recipe in the database. Then I weigh out my food and eat it with them.

If I cant figure out calories, I'll do a quick add overestimate and be super good the remainder of the day.

Also, don't be afraid to bring something to help round out your meal. My family recently had a birthday dinner. They were having tacos - so I brought spinach and peppers to make a taco salad (skipped the shells) and I brought a mango for dessert (though I didn't end up eating it because I was so full!

Also the longer you weigh & measure your own stuff, the better you'll get at estimating what other people cook, whether at friends or restaurants or the office potluck or whatever. No it won't always be super accurate but it's about being consistent in your measuring methods...being a bit off in a meal here and there won't affect your weekly numbers.
