SODIUM

Ok, so I have been having issues of going over on my sodium a little and alot since starting mfp. I dont think its hindering my weightloss but sometimes its an eyeopener or a downer to me. I like my six inch subs from subway which I keep healthy and loaded with veggies but still are around 600-800 in sodium. I like my turkey hot dogs and polish, turked bacon and smoked turkey legs and meats at time, but still sodium kind of high. I'm sure you see where, I'm going with this. I feel as if I'm making the healthy choice, but the sodium. Anyone else dealing with the same things or have to insight.

I use to pour salt all over my food and never added it my diary and the sodium was all ready high but last week I just stopped adding the salt all together to see if i could stop.
I now know the table salt is just a habit for me as I can taste so much more in my food now.

when it comes to meats they tend to add a lot of salt even more so if it has been cured as covering meats in salt is the process so it's not a surprise that eating meats like sausages and bacon makes ppl sodium rocket through the roof.
Sodium is definitely some thing to keep an eye on as this is one cause of high blood presser which non of us want.

:flowerforyou: anytime you eat out the sodium content is horrible! i don't understand why it has to be that way! try buying fresh foods from the grocery store & make your own sub at home. i cook pork & slice it up without the salt! i do the same with beef roast! you can save a lot of sodium by cooking at home!

I used to add salt to most things. Salty foods are definitely my weakness (would have a bag of crisps over chocolate any day). Recently I've tried to seriously cut back on it. However, I get annoyed that it's added to pretty much everything. Even a bag of mixed spices I'd been using - yesterday I realised the first ingredient was salt, why?! If I wanted to add salt I would add salt!

Anyway, I get bloated very easily and have been trying to work out which foods cause it. Apart from wheat and when I eat too much dairy, I think a big thing for me is salt. If I eat very little I don't feel too bad but if I've been eating lots of salty things I get very bloated. Think it retains water. Of course it will affect everyone differently though.

In my experience, the easiest way to cut down on sodium is to make as much of your food as possible from scratch. Fast food, restaurant food and shop bought ready meals tend to be very high in sodium.

Sodium tends to be the spot I go over in the most...followed by sugar. It doesn't take much to blow your sodium intake out of the water. I tend to prepare my own foods these days. Anytime I go over, it's largely due to eating out or having deli sliced meats. Sara Lee has a Lower Sodium turkey breast option at the deli. It hasn't hindered my weight loss, but I tend to focus a lot of my energies on keeping my sodium down. In my unhealthy days, I'm sure I took in twice as much, so I try to keep that in mind. It makes a few red days better for me.
