Question for all young stylish men

Do you paint your fingernails? I am seeing this more and more. My step-daughter's boyfriend came to dinner last week wearing black polish which was starting to chip off his nails. So, is this just a fad or do you think it will continue on?

Yes, it's trendy, just like wearing a skirt, make-up or dyeing your eyebrows yellow, blue or red. He could also be gay or a goth. I'm going to assume your step-daughter is younger than 17 so my guess is he's doing it to stand out and thus get a girlfriend :)

I don't know about goths boys in skirts, but yeah, I have seen black polish on the emo/goths before. I don't think they get away with other colors though, and there may be other reasons for it too. (And since you have to be carded now to get nail polish remover, he may have decided to let it just wear off)

    No.

If my daughter's boyfriend showed up at the dinner table with his fingernails painted I'd find a new use for the carving knives.

Honestly? If a heterosexual man comes in wearing any form of nail polish then they don't know anything about being stylish.

so if you're gay its ok? isn't that kinda.... racist?

I'm neither young nor stylish, but my young and very fashion-forward (female) friend advised me to paint my nails 15 years ago, so it's been acceptable in trendy circles at least since then, I'd wager. I'd totally be on it if I had a look that fingernail polish could integrate into, but I don't have the fashion sense to pull it off.

Letting the fingernail polish get all chipped, however, is a little much. If he's still around on his birthday, you should have your daughter buy him a manicure.

(Also: a new use for the carving knives? Really?)

I have a teenage son--he's just turned 18. He's stylish, and there is no way would he paint his fingernails.

Well I am not that young, but yes I paint my nails black or a dark blue and have done so on and off for at least 22 yrs.
Also I am heterosexual(not that I think it matters) Its just a matter of preference and style I guess.

I believe the term you was looking for was "homophobic". And no, not really. Just I know plenty of homosexual men who wear clear nail polish.

actually i was kind of taking the piss out of you. lol. thanks for correcting my definition, top marks.

it wouldn't really be homophobic because you are hating on straight guys. where to do meet these "homosexual friends"? chariots perhaps?

The way I see it is this, you can have your own sense of "style" but there is a global acceptance of what being "stylish" is. And too me, being stylish for a man means dressing your self like a gentleman and looking presentable in both a working and social environment.

You wouldn't see Ryan Reynolds or David Beckham wearing nail polish would you? ;)

At what point am I hating on anyone? If you want to paint your nails, go ahead I don't care, but that's hardly "stylish" now is it? Rock and Roll probably.

So long as the color matches his purse I don't see a problem.

I'm don't think your hating on anyone per-se, but it is funny that you think its ok if i like boys, but not if i like girls. how does that work?

... What on Earth are you talking about? Can't you just read something how I've actually worded it instead of trying to some how interpret some secret hidden message about homosexuality?

To me, that's more of a tattooed, long haired rocker guy type statement than anything else. Some of my more gothy friends in high school would paint their nails black, too. You probably won't see the soccer dads with blue manicures but that's alright. If you like it, wear it - if you don't, don't.

I'm 27, not that young and not a man, but I've seen regular, straight boys/men with painted nails all my life. I think to my generation it's pretty normal, like tattoos and bright dyed hair.
