I have heard this two ways....lift light with more reps or go for heavy just until you can't go any further? I am thinking that using heavier weights may be best for getting some muscle definition. Any one have the info on this?

(sorry...word should be "work")

    Heavy weights low reps

The Stronglifts 5x5 program is what i am doing at the moment. 3 hours a week 5 sets of 5 reps 5 different compound exercises simple fast and easy to progress on.

I am up to Squatting and dead lifting Body weight (85kg) in 4 and a half weeks and i can feel the difference.

Do not lift to fail. Being unable to walk the next day is not strictly an indication of progress!

The best way to build strength is to lift weights that are a challenge for you to move a short number of times. 6 reps or less is generally considered to be the range of training appropriate for most efficiently building pure strength. Pick a weight that is difficult for you to complete 8 good reps with (before form begins to be threatened) and then try starting with something like 3 sets of 5 reps at that weight.

There are uses for other set/rep schemes, but they are not designed for pure strength increase. Higher reps per set are more well-suited for endurance training or bodybuilding.
