Heavy weights and few reps or light weights and lots of reps? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? I have been doing some basic stuff like bicep curls and such and wondered what was recommended.

What are your goals? Find a routine and stick with it for at least 8-12 weeks. Many people do recommend strong lifts or starting strength but you don't necessary have to do them. Go to bodybuilding.com forum and look under the workout section. There are stickys that have set workouts.
Heavy Weights low reps vs low weight lots of reps. Generally speaking heavy weights are for strength and size and low weights for lots of reps are more for strength endurance. Don't get caught up using one set rep range. Vary it.0
