Ankle pain after running?

Lately when I run outside my left ankle/shin area hurts for the next day or so. Is there anything I can do other than wearing an ankle brace to help? It doesn't hurt when I run on the treadmill, just when I run on concrete or asphalt.

I am starting to train for my half marathon on September 1st and I will need to run outside more than just on the treadmill...

Before opting for a brace rethink your shoes! I have had chronic left ankle pain after a stress fracture 2.5 years ago after running a marathon. Only recently did I switch from my Aasics to a pair of Saucony that is good for runners with ankle issues. Kid you not, the pain and swelling are nearly gone. I really think that my old shoes were in conflict with my foot strike, exacerbating the instability in the ankle.

FYI, the new shoes are Saucony Guide 5.

In the meantime, ice the ankle, try ibuprofen therapy, and take a few days off. Good luck with the training!
  • I totally agree with you that shoes are essential in reducing and preventing ankle pain. I would definitely like to try using an ankle brace or support of some sort but not sure which one. I regularly do yoga, which requires alot of footwork, and I experience moderate pain sometimes. Would this kind (See: http://www.braceability.com/ankle-braces-ankle-support/bort-dual-tension-thin-ankle-brace ) of ankle support be sufficient enough?
