Just a Vent

And so I have gained again, I am having a hard time with my exercise as my knees, ankle and heels are killing me. I am still trying to do the stairs at work everyday, but it is getting harder and harder. What the heck am I going to do, I cannot gain all this weight back, although it is only 21lbs it is still 21lbs.

First see a doctor to make sure it is not serious. Keep logging your food and making sure you eat properly. This is the main way to at least maintain. If you can get to a pool do some water exercises. They help build strength without the pounding on your joints of regular exercise.

I have seen the doctor, I was told to lose weight and that would take care of the stress on my knees and ankles. Well a little hard to do that when you can't move because of severe pain, I can only take Tylenol and that stuff does not work at all. Pool exercises sound great, but there are only a couple places in my area and way expensive and I just cannot afford it, unfortunately. I will just continue to log and hope for the best. Thank you.

You can lose weight without exercising. If you are gaining weight, maybe you need to readjust your current eating habits for a more stationary lifestyle. I would also recommend that if you are having issues with your lower body, maybe you could focus on some more upper body exercising and weight training. Losing body fat is not spot specific so any type of calorie burn would be beneficial. I know on 30 Day Shred, Jillian Michaels talks about punches and how it's a good cardio workout when you have lower body pain/problems.

Lift weights. Real weights. Heavy weights.

Although this seems contradictary, strengthening those muscles, supporting muscles, ligaments, tendons, and so on and so forth, may help ease your pain.

But I am not a doctor, so I have to add a disclaimer.

    DISCLAIMER:

Do not start a new exercise regiment withouth proper consent from your private physician or doctor.

You should be able to lose weight without exercising by eating a bit less, so just log carefully. Then you can always get the muscles back once your knees recover. :)

Losing weight is like 80% about diet, so you can certainly lose without exercising!

Ouch. So sorry. hate hearing about people who are suffering trying to do some exercise. Pilates is excellent for building core stabilisation and supports your joints. Get a good instructor who has not just been on the latest one month course. I have done Pilates for 10 years (with select personal instructors over the years, once a week, lucky me) and said goodbye to my back pain and weak joints. And my posture is just brilliant! After being hunched over for years - until my 30s - because of my height and big boobs. If you can afford it, its worth it.

I have been there many many times, Having my second son in my 40s has caused me to really examine what my life will be like if I dont change it. Will I be here for him when hes older if I dont stop how I was living. Maybe not. That's a chance I cant take. If it means sweating, exercising and eating right, that's what i have to do. Other wise who is going to be there for my baby if I am not. Yes he has dad, but Mom loves her boys enough to do what she needs to do to be there for them. And that's trying to prolong my life.
If you really want to change your life. You will do it. Its not going to be easy we know this. But you have already put in the effort and sweat and tears to get where you are, dont look back.

All I can say is really learn about your body and about nutrition it has helped me to make some needed changes. I still have a LOT more to learn I know this. But any and all you can to help is better then remaining the same. I hope you get thru this and keep on plugging to get yourself in better health for you and your family.

I would see an orthopedic specialist. I just went and discovered I needed a knee replacement. I wouldn't accept the just cause your over weight. You have been overweight all along right, and it is getting worse but you are getting thinner. Something wrong.

I have no been tested for that. I know it does run in the family my mom has had both her knee's replaced and her mom had both knee's and hip's replaced. I will be making another call to the doctor and see if they can do that.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I appreciate it.

First: focus on logging and what you're eating. Make that your primary focus. I've lost the majority of my weight without much in the way of exercise. My feeling is: what you eat is WAY more important than whatever exercises you're trying to do in trying to lose weight. If you're exercising to try to get fit, that's fine, but I would lay off it until, #2 below.....

Secondly, see a doctor about your knees and if there's anything that can be done to improve your quality of life. There's no need to go through life in pain.

I was the same way when I started out. I struggled working out because my knees and ankles hurt so bad. I went on Amazon and purchased knee and ankle braces. It helped so much. Then the more I worked out the less they hurt. After losing almost 30 pounds I don't even need to wear them anymore.

If you have a YMCA in your area check to see if they have a charity program where they take applications and for low income families or individuals they will give you a reduced cost. For myself and my son they are only charging me $12.00 a month. Thats where I do my aqua exercise class.

Yes, go see a doctor, and in the mean time, lay off the exercises that are putting stress on you joints (cut out the stairs for now). Try swimming or water aerobics, something that's joint friendly.

I have to agree with this! I lost 75+ pounds when I was on Weight Watchers before adding exercise...

I was going to suggest yoga too. And try more upper body like one of the previous replies said. Your legs don't necessarily have to be moving for you to burn fat. No one likes feeling "stuck"...good luck!
  • look on the arthritis foundation web site for excercises you can do with minimal impact to your joints.

It is a catch 22....but don't get discouraged. You can also often find classes run by the arthritis foundation that are low impact.

I went ahead and looked at your diary. I see that you are tracking calories, carbs, protein, and fat. I did not see your values for sodium nor did I see values for potassium. I am wondering if your sodium levels are high and you are retaining water. Also low potassium can lead to joint pain. You should be intaking twice as much potassium as you are sodium. Even if you are taking potassium supplements, you need to figure your milligrams so that you are getting enough. If I forget to be careful about that, my lower body lets me know. You can go in and choose those values for your menu and just see where you are.

I just went to my diary and added those two things. So I will see how I am doing. I went over my sodium today by 10, not good. THank you for telling me about that, Now I can look at those also.

Again thank you all so much for the feedback.
  • You might want to have your doctor check your uric acid level. You could be having problems with gouty arthritis. As your body breaks down fat the acid can build up in your system and then turns to crystals that tend to effect the joints of the knees, ankles, and feet. Crystal look like jagged pieces of glass under a microscope. Very painful.......

I have suffered with it since I was 13 and everytime I go to lose weight it will flare up. I take Colcrys on a daily basis but it still likes to flare up if I drop weight to fast. Then you have to increase the dosage and drink lots of WATER to flush from your system. Caffeine will agrivate it.

It is so painful with a full blown attack that the Japanese would inject the POWS with uric acid and after the gout set into their joints they would then twist their legs to make them talk.

Hope this is not your problem as I would not wish it on my worst enemy.
