Russian Twists vs side planks

What are the russian twists really targeting? My obliques do hurt after I do them (Right now I'm doing them with 2 5lb weights for 1 minute), but if I do side planks with pulses my obliques hurt worse the next day.

Yes, I'm trying to get rid of my love handles. -__- They're not attractive and it's swim suit season here in Florida.

While this isn't your question, the love handles will go away will body fat reduction, not building muscle underneath the fat.

Yes, but I still want to tone the muscle I have there, which it's there, it's just not as tone as I'd like. I just started back exercising, I had surgery on my foot in november to remove a piece of metal and had a long recovery as I didn't follow the doctors orders to walk on it that day (I honestly thought he was insane, the stitches were literally in the middle of the bottom of my foot) so it took me a while to start walking and running again and it still stretches the spot where it was and hurts ocassionally but I'm gettin back to it.

This. Also why not do both? Have an AB session A and an AB session B. One with side planks and the other with Russian twists.

You should try using weights heavier than 2.5 lbs for Russian twists.

    Also, this.

And no one is saying don't before abdominal exercises. We're simply stressing that if you don't reduce the layer of fat, the love handles won't go away. That can only be achieved through a deficit.

Do you have a sturdy box that you can store books, like encyclopedias, inside? You can probably fit 10 lbs of books easily in a decently-sized box.

I am at a deficit, currently eating 1200 calories a day + 1/2 my exercise calories back (I'm still debating on continuing this). I have my first weigh in tomorrow so we'll see how it's working thus far.

I think I can find a box to put them in, yes, thanks for the idea.

Before I owned an weights, I used to use things that would be heavier, but not cumbersome to hold. Put some cans of food in a small purse or some sand in a gallon jug. Those are just a couple of ideas. Look around your home for something that weighs more. put it on your scale to get an idea of how much it weighs. I never injured myself doing this, and it's gotta be more progressive than using 2.5 pounds. If I'm wrong on this, don't everyone correct me at once, just throwing out ideas that have worked for me. haha

Technically right now, I'm using 10 pounds because I'm using 2 five pound weights, but I would like something heavier so I'm currently searching my house and weighing things. My family thinks i'm losing my marbles.

Just tell them it's for the sake of fitness. My friends think I'm crazy because I love to workout and jog. haha I convinced a girl to go with me once, and the next day she was so sore she refused to talk to me for 2 weeks. Hopefully they will adjust to your "insanity"!!! haha

I don't know why they're not proud of it, they've always referred to me as "chunky" ever since I was like 7 or 8 so they should be happy I'm getting fit but they're watching me with raised eyebrows and silent whispers as I whisk around the room looking for heavier things and asking if we have any good boxes. ...
