well ive finally taken that step and am deciding to start running. thing is outside of the forced runs I was made to do during PE classes at school ive never ran for exercise or whatever(minus the couple of times I had to run to catch the city bus)

so what are some tips and pointers you suggest for the first time runner? Also what do you suggest I wear during runs, keep in mind I live in sunny, humid, hot florida.

    Couch to 5k program.

Wear whatever you're comfortable wearing. I like compression gear... keeps stuff that jiggles from jiggling

Get some running shoes from a good running store. Have them fit you properly.

Your profile mentions that you love to bike (cycle?). Perhaps you could integrate a cycling program with your desire to run? Cycling is lower impact and easier on your joints.

I second the suggestion to use the C25K program if you decide to run. It mixes walking and running to help you build up your endurance.

Suggestion #1: Get good shoes! Learn to stride in the way that's right for you, whether it's the 'traditional' heel strike or the mid-foot strike. I prefer the mid-foot strike; it's worth researching.

Suggestion #2: Take it slow, take it steady, and don't overlook the benefits of lifting as well as doing your cardio.

    Best of luck!

    My advice,

Support!! Good shoes, get fitted for shoes at a proper running store. and on the support theme...a good bra...the cheap sports bra style bras you see at most major retailers do nothing for the girls.

I love the c25k program I did each week 2-3 times before moving on to the next week (the first time I did the program)

I did the BUPA beginners 5k program and found that very useful, same sort of thing as C25K i guess.

I would also say dont give up! stick at it and make the program a part of your normal week so it becomes a routine. And I echo the comment suggesting weights, i started running a year ago but only started weights a couple of months ago and it makes a difference.

Its a hard thing to get into but doing a structured program really helps you get the bug :)

    Good luck

    What to wear in Florida?

    Sunscreen. Lots of it.
    I'd vote a visor. I wear a hat, but - #1, it keeps more heat in and #2, I don't have hair
    NO COTTON!!!!
