Weighing yourself

Is there anyone else on here that does not own a scale? If I have one in the house I will weigh myself every morning obsessively and if I'm not seeing the results I want I get depressed and stop eating properly. Its just best for me to not have one really. I will weigh myself once every 6-8 weeks at my parents house.

I am just wondering.

I have a scale and I weigh myself every morning, right after the morning dump but before breakfast. If I don't like what I see, I try hard to remember what I did or ate yesterday that could possibly be the culprit.

You can treat this like a popularity contest that makes you feel down when the scale is being mean, or you can treat this as an ongoing experiment that makes you smarter (and do better next time) for each mistake or setback.

    That is a good point!

This can also make you go crazy! Weight fluctuates naturally, expecially with a woman. My weight will go up and down several lbs within a few days, and if I weighed every day I'd go nuts. Seeing a gain instead of a loss is depressing, so why subject yourself to it? I weigh in monday mornings at the same time which gives me a bit more of an accurate reading of the weight I am losing. Some people here only weigh in once a month! Better than using a scale, is using a measuring tape. Measurements show much more progress than the scale, expecially if you are lifting.

I didn't own a scale for the first 6 months that I was losing. But, I didn't know I was on a diet. I made some changes, but that was just because I liked the food I was introducing myself too. That resulted in what was probably a 500 calorie deficit. I was becoming aware of calories, but I wasn't measuring so much or counting, just reading the labels and kind of sort of estimating what I was taking in. I cut down to eating 3 meals and a snack a day. Which was down from 4 meals and a snack, guess that is where I lost the 500 calories. I didn't get a scale until I had been here for a couple of weeks. Now I am weighing myself daily for many reasons. One, I want to get a better idea of how many calories my chosen activities really burn, I want to keep an eye on what water retention does to the scale, two I am looking for a downward trend in my weight.

I'm not going to buy a scale, I like to see it in my clothes and how they fit.

My weight fluctuates within hours. If I weigh at night just before bedtime, I'm usually about 5lbs heavier. Women have to deal with menstrual cycle, so that has to be factored in as well. Focus on the trend rather than the number. If your weight yoyos up and down but generally doesn't consistently go up, then it's ok. If all you see are increases, then it's a red flag.
