Hey you! Weight lifter! I've got a protein question.

I've heard that you should consume protein within a half hour window of completing strength training. Got it.

But, what if you're doing an hour-long workout, and you start with 30 min. of weight training, and end with 30 min. of cardio? Do you stop your workout routine after you're done lifting, to scarf 5 hard boiled eggs before getting on the treadmill?

  • I just drink a Whey Protein shake after working out.. I don't really wait. Or I eat a protein bar, wait 30 minutes then start my workout, then hit the Whey. It's been working for me so far.. I don't really worry about how long I'm working out. I just consume my protein after any workout.. I feel really good when I do. Of course, this might not be the answer you're looking for, but I tried.
I can't really eat boiled eggs without wanting to brush my teeth. lol.

There's no real evidence of an "anabolic window" that occurs just after weight training. Just do what you want.

I've yet to see a reputable study that indicates there's a 'magic window' for when you should consume protein for best results. So long as you're getting sufficient protein per day, its timing is essentially irrelevant.

Here's my source if anyone is interested.

In a generalized sense, there is roughly an hour-long, "window of opportunity," once you complete your resistance workout. So, if your concern is protein consumption post-workout, as long as you consume your whey within an hour, you're fine. But, don't over-think all of this. Just keep your nutrition in check and train insane, or the remain the same. Blood, sweat, and YEARS are what build bodies. Good luck.

I agree with this - for the average person just trying to stay in shape it isn't necessary to time everything to the hour.

Just make sure you are getting adequate protein throughout the day.

meal timing is unimportant unless you're a high performance athlete.

just fit in the food when it's convenient for you and ensures you get good workouts in (ie. you don't eat in such a way that you are lethargic when working out)

The idea you need to consume protein after working out is broscience. If there's any truth to it, the difference it would make would be so trivial it wouldn't be worth stressing over.
