Does hiking burn more calories then walking?

Dumb question I know, but I cant figure it out for the life of me if hiking is equivalent to walking or not. When logging it the amount of calories burned seemed comparable but shouldn't it matter what type of trail you take - i.e. a lot of up hill/ down hill or just straight? Thanks for any feed back.

I think it is not a smart idea to log calories without a HRM anyways. You have already figured out why that is not a good idea0
