Weights- What's the best way to start?

My goal is to lose fat, a lot of it. I have been doing cardio a few times a week. I am not losing as fast as I want to, and I think lifting weights would help me. I am not new to lifting. When I was thinner, I did weights a few times a week. I got sick, and couldnt work out as much, and I gained a lot of weight and then i got pregnant and gained even more.
The problem is, I do not know what type of program I should do. Where do I start? Machines? Free weights? Both? How much cardio?
