Gloves for pull ups?

So, I installed a pull up bar in my basement for P90X. Okay lets be honest, it is a metal rod from Lowes fastened between two floor beams. It is, however, able to hold a 500 lb person and the correct diameter for a proper grip. The issue is this, it is metal. Metal with sweaty hands leads to bad grip and callus.

Should I find gloves for this bar or find something to wrap it in? And, what gloves or wrap would you recommend?

As unsafe as it already sounds, id go with the gloves instead of trying to wrap it up.

Use some sand paper to rough it up a bit and use chalk to assist your grip.

I agree with the above, rough up the bar and get climbers chalk. The calluses will even out over time.

Or, you could try something like hockey tape on the bar, but it will have to be redone from time to time.

I don't like gloves because they will have the effect of changing the diameter of the bar potentially having an impact on your ability to establish a good grip. But lifting gloves are relatively cheap as is chalk, give all of the above a try.
  • Wrap the pipe in climbing / medical tape, or even that black sanded safety tape meant for stairs. Also, you might want to look into using wrist wraps for pull ups, just as one would for deadlifts. Pullups are a lat exercise, but doing them "raw", you'll quickly limit yourself as your grip / wrists will give out before your lats will.

These do the trick for me. I workout in my garage where triple-digit temps are the norm for half of the year.
