As you become more fit and in better shape do you burn fewer calories for the same effort?

As you lose weight and gain more muscle, your body becomes more efficient, so one must work harder to burn the same amount of calories. So, yeah, what surlydave said.0

If you mean the same exercise as in "Bike 10 miles" then it will be generally equal because mechanical work is mechanical work. It simply won't take nearly as much of your maximum effort, which can now burn more calories per minute than when you started. The reason it would be less is if you had lost significant weight getting fit and therefore you will have performed less mechanical work because you moved less mass over the 10 miles.0
