The secret is Nutrition people! No magic pill, no low carb this and high carb that just quality food that holds real nutritional value for your bodies, minds and souls (and it tastes good who would have thought!) This is me sharing my new passion. I have struggled with my weight for pretty much my whole life and am a self diagnosed food addict. I finally realized I was a food addict when I found myself bargaining with myself in the chip isle, "if i eat these now I just won't eat dinner later" or in the jack in the box drive thru, "if I get the large fries I just wont have the bun on my burger" yikes! Then I watched a single movie that changed my life forever. The hungry for change documentary opened my eyes to the fact that we as a society are starving! but not from calories we are starving for nutrition, our bodies are begging for real whole foods and not all this crap we buy that's "healthy" because it's low carb or it's low fat (which pretty much means PROCESSED AND FULL OF ARTIFICAL INGREDIENTS).
My main point is this, Today I pre-logged all my food for and it made me wonder why people say they are starving on 1200 calories because I am doing 1300 and I am able to enjoy a **** load of food. This is one of my main arguments for eating clean, whole foods.
If you're meals are nutritious quality foods you shouldn't be hungry and if you are I would recommend taking a look at the quality of your food and not just the calories.
Really start feeding your body NUTRITION and not just Food... Make Today the day and you will see!!
I really urge you to do research into the food you are eating and putting into your bodies. I know some will argue that cost is a factor and I am here to tell you with no shame that my family and I are currently on food stamps and we eat mostly whole foods, organic fruits and veggies, quality grains, seeds, legimens, beans and quality dairy foods. My husband still eats meat which for my own personal choices I chose to give up a month ago (I still eat fish) but I buy quality meat that is grass feed no hormones added. We invest so much of our lives and resources into so many minescule small things why wouldn't we do the same for what goes into our bodies?
Think about this...
Once I made the choice to take control of my own health and my families it made the battle with weight and food in general so much easier. It may not be convienent but it's sure worth it!
Thanks for reading my post, I hope that it has awakened something in you to make the change for a better life!

Edited because some people may misunderstand the point of this post : I never said you cant have a candy bar, If you paid attention you would see that I eat 80% clean and enjoy treats 20% of the time which is why I eat candy, in n out and other yummie things every now and again. I am not being self righteous I am simply stating facts. The point of the post was to encourage food addicts such as myself to change the way they are thinking about food and to realize that a lot of the foods that we are putting into our bodies are not "healthy" as the food manufactures lead you to believe and that we can take control of our bodies and minds (which food addiction is as much a mind struggle as it is a physical one) but I understand that being closed minded and defensive is a common reaction for someone to have when they don't fully understand something.
*** TROLLS PLEASE! I never used unkind, angry or harsh tones in my original post I would accept the same with your comments/concerns. I am an open minded individual who can argue my opinion while still respecting others side of things and would appreciate the same. Sorry if you take offense to my post or the topic title, if you do I encourage you not to read it

Right you are!
I saw that film 'Hungry for Change'... It shocked me!
I am a mother of 2 boys ages 1 & 3.. My 3 year old is VERY picky with food.
I am working on making small changes for my Family, like making my husband eat more GREENS!
Trying to buy MORE veggies & Fruit and Non Processed foods. Making these changes is hard, and slow.. BUT I am doing it.
That film was a Life changing experience for me & I am glad I saw it.
Thank you for sharing

I have nothing against healthy eating, but making a candy bar equivalent to drinking Draino really irks me. This all or nothing mentality is the reason so many of us are fat already.
Also, what worked for you, works for you, not me. Don't be so self righteous please.0 -

I personally agree with you, just need to make myself do this stuff.0

When I had walking pneumonia this past March, I ate takeout and fast food almost every day and still lost weight every single week. Granted, I went with the healthiest options available, but I'm j/s.0

I really appreciate your post. I've been reading this concept for years, ever since Dr. Dean Ornish came out with "Eat More to Weigh Less" back in the 1990's, and shortly after Dr. Joel Fuhrman came out with "Eat to Live. The light came on for me when I started to understand that I will continue to crave food until my body is truly 'well nourished' (not just well fed) and that until my body is well 'nourished' I will continue to be fat and tired. I believe I crave food, even when I'm full, because my body wants more real nutrients, whole foods.
For me, however, eating 'clean' doesn't seem to be quite enough in order for the cravings to subside and for me to consistently lose weight. I can eat whole, organic foods and still feel hungry and still not lose weight. So, I've been wondering if maybe my gut (after years of abuse - I'm 60 now) no longer has the ability to digest and absorb nutrients as well as it used to.
So, along a similar track of Joe Cross' "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead", I'm doing a modified 'reboot' to give my gut a leg up, and am in the process of switching to blended salads, fruit smoothies and vegetable juicing, to radically increase the surface area of the food so my gut can absorb and my cells can have access to more of those amazing nutrients. I've lost 12 pounds since April 1st ( today is May 7th), have more energy, and the cravings are subsiding. I do think it may be possible to avoid this step ( of juicing and blending) if you eat slowly and are a meticulous chewer. ( haven't we been told this all our lives? Could it really be as simple as this? ) I'd also like to thank my kids for bringing me to MFP. Reading other people's stories on here, as well as watching my kids own personal transformations, has really helped keep me motivated.0 -
Such a great thread! I re-watch "Hungry For Change" every two or three months, just to remind myself how awesome it is and keep me on track!0

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.0

I really enjoyed that documentary too. But I think the biggest problem we have with staying on diets is making them too complicated. I'm never going to write all that down, stick exclusively to it, and eat the same thing the rest of my life. I aplaude the juicers but dang... no way.
I like MFP because the simple fact is, if you consume less calories than you burn (unless you push yourself into starvation mode) you're going to loose weight. End of story, no memorization, no life time restrictions, this is a lifestyle I can stick with, not a drawn out step by step list of work to do that will make me feel guilty when I fail at it.
I will take down some of those meals and incorporate them though. I'm always looking for delicious meals.0 -
Just curious how you can afford organic fruits and veggies and grass-fed beef on food stamps. I don't buy processed food, junk food, prepared food, whatever you call it and I rarely eat out. I also have a decent food budget for 1 person ($300/month) but even I can't afford grass-fed beef and all-organic.0
-
You should watch a Beautiful truth and Dying to Know both real good and I agree but also you have be smart and understand that you won't be able to do 100 percent organic but to try to the most you can.0

I think it depends on where you live and shop. In my household, we don't have any aid and we spend about $200 a month for 4 people and we manage get a lot of organic fruits and veggies. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's has organic stuff but they're pricey. However, the market we go to buys a lot of its produce from local farms and sells it for a lower price than some of the non-organic stuff. The seafood is usually fresh as well, and depending on what fish you get, can be rather cheap. They sometimes do daily deals on items they need to get rid of-- it's not too weird for us to get a pound or so of salmon, tuna, catfish, or tilapia for about three bucks some days. We also go to ethnic groceries and you can usually find great deals. I don't really pay attention to what kind meats we get as I'm not a big meat eater, though.0 -
OP, just so we're clear, are you saying this is "what worked" for you, or "what is working" for you?
Because regardless of what many will inevitably scream in response to my post, I believe there is a difference.0 -

I provide a bowl of cantaloupe, watermelon, sliced apples or berries to my 1 and 3 year old every night at dinner along with whatever else I make. If my three year old only eats the rice, she'll usually also eat some cantaloupe. Having her dip the apples in yogurt is also a win. I've had good luck with the baby food packets. It might not be the greatest source, but some spinach is better than no spinach in the tummy.0 -
I've never seen the movie; but I do believe in You are What you Eat (and I have watched plenty of Gillian McKeith's shows and have her book). I have also taken classes on raw food diets and believe in eating whole, organic, raw foods the majority of the time. I am much healthier and happier when I do eat that way. Not everyone "wants" to eat that way...there is no "it won't work for me"; it is "I do't want to do it b/c ....fill in the blank". However, it is highly beneficial; I agree. I did try 100% and couldn't handle that. I try for 75-85% now and that works better for me. I will say that I am very rarely sick. I did get the flu 2 years ago, but I wasn't eating this way then, I was moving (states), changing jobs, stressed and our movers had H1N1 (unbeknownst to us) and they packed us out at our old house, then unpacked us at our new....I had no fighting chance.0

All good, but not necessarily for anyone. As my providers and dietician would most likely tell you, if you have any underlying conditions, (HTN, DM, RF, celiacs, diverticulitis, etc. etc.) You will need to be cognizant of certian dietary restrictions and needs. Also there are several religious sects that have dietary restrictions that they should be following as well.
Not for everyone.0 -
How in the world do you feed 4 people on 200/month? Please share your secrets! :-D
And I think this post is a great idea. Definitely make sense0 -

I was thinking the same thing!! We have a fmaily of three and get $450.00 a month in aide, we shop at ralphs, trader joes and fresh and easy along with the regular market for certain things.0 -
I appreciate your enthusiasm, but not the post where you call someone a troll for pointing out that what works for you doesn't work for everyone.
As i said before the troll comment was directed towards calling me self righteous because that was not my tone or intention in the post, this post was meant for people like me who where struggling with food addiction and what is working for me in my journey, Ive gottin so many PMs and positive feedback from those people and the ones who this doesn't pertain to, thats okay but they dont need to put me down on my thread you know0 -

Guess I should have worded my topic heading better probably would have saved myself a lot of heat :laugh:0 -

I saw that show. It had a lot of good points. Lucky for me, I already like many different fruits & veggies. Mainly, I've just had to cut back on the treats and the "food like products," and keep an accurate count of my calories.0
