Too much fibre?

Is it really a problem if I'm drinking a LOT of water every day?

I try to keep the numbers down, but I'm usually over my macro limit by noon.

I'm eating clean, not hungry, but trying to get my calories up as I know they are low. Unfortunately it seems that to get them up, I'm also upping my fibre intake even more. I don't mind being a little over on my protein because my body needs it if I'm going to continue working out regularly.

I'm just not sure if I should worry that my fibre numbers are over by 60%-100% every day, or if this is not a big deal.

Never tracked this before and I'm a total newbie to MFP and this kind of purposeful lifestyle change.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read/respond.

Bailey

It's only a problem, in my opinion, if you are having digestive...problems. Otherwise, fiber on.

Exactly. I eat as much as 50 g of fiber every day to no ill effect.

Fibre is more of a "get at LEAST this much" kind of macro, than a "don't go over this much".

You want to get at least the amount of fibre, you can go over it quite a bit.

I'm over on fiber all the time, I try to go over. I used to work for a gastrointerologist who suggests 30-35g of fiber per day for adlt women. According to the Harvard School of public health, 14g for every 1,000 cals you eat is a good estimate as well though: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/fiber-table/

Awesome! Thanks all. I will remove this macro from my watch list since I am clearly meeting my daily needs.

The RDA for fiber is the minimum number of grams you should eat per day, not a maximum. If you are getting fiber from food rather than supplements, it would be hard to get too much and still meet your calorie and macronutrients goals.

I just read an article in a fitness magazine that said to make sure you drink alot of water if you go over on fiber. Something about your organs needing the extra water in order for the fiber to do what it does. I know that's pretty vague but I'm sure you can look it up. I suffer from ADD when reading articles sometimes!

LOL @highmaintnanc. I'm drinking usually between 16-18 cups of water a day. I got that' covered!

Usually the only problem with fiber is if you have a sudden, rapid increase in your fiber intake, which can cause you some uncomfortable digestive issues until your body gets used to it. So if you weren't eating much before and wanted to increase it, you'd do it slowly. That's the only concern. MFP gives a strangely low RDA of fiber IMO. But as others have said it's an "at least this much" thing.

I changed my goal from what MFP set for me to be 40g per day. I haven't died yet. :drinker: Eat up that fiber! It'll keep you full and satisfied!

I'd kinda curious what your diet's like that you're that far over every day, but I don't think there's a such thing as "too much," provided your digestive system and digestive/work schedule allow it...if you know what I mean.
