Looking for an app for races...

Does anyone know of an app that will help meet race goals? For instance, if I wanted to run a 5K in 24:38 minutes... is there an app out there that would track my distance and tell me I need to run faster to meet my goal time?

My Garmin watch has a feature where you put in your desired pace and it will coach you on when you need to speed up or slow down. Not sure about apps. Have used run keeper in the past and you could set it to give you audio clues as to your current pace and overall pace but don't think it has the feature you are looking for. Good luck.

You could try the Nike+ running app, it gives you your current pace but I'm not sure if it will set alerts. I love this app, you can add friends and compete against each other on the leaderboard.
  • If you're looking for something free, Endomondo (app) will audibly give you your per mile time over the music you're listening to. I love it and it's much cheaper than a Garmin.

I think RunKeeper will do it. It will definitely tell you your average and current pace and/or speed (among other things) at whatever interval you choose.

I have mine set to tell me the total time, total distance, and average pace once per minute. In your example, you would just need to know that your goal pace is 7:57 min/mile and use the audio cues to adjust as necessary.

RunKeeper works well for me and it is free. It doesn't tell you to speed up to hit your goal but it does tell you your average pace among other things through out your activity. Mine is set for every 5 minutes. You can use it for Running, Walking, Cycling etc. I love it! Good luck.

MapMyRun will definitely do it. You can set your target pace and have it tell you at a pre-set interval how far off you are.

I used to use that before I started using RunKeeper. I switched because RunKeeper saves more detailed data and I like to look at it after the run (e.g., I can see my speed on a per minute average basis as well as on a per mile average basis).

Wow everyone! Thanks so much for your feedback. I see I'll have to do some research on apps you've all mentioned and hopefully try them out before my next race.

    Find a running calculator:

Plug in the time, 24:38 and the distance (5k) and it tells you that you need to run a 7:55 pace to meet this time. During your race use an app like RunKeeper and if it's telling you "Average pace 8:00" then you need to speed up. Do you follow?

I agree - I'm pretty sure RunKeeper added this training feature a few updates back. I haven't played with it either, but I have seen in in the app.

I use Sport Track Live and it can be set to give audio feedback during an event to help meet the goals you specify, used on a Samsung Galaxy.
