to lose less than 10 lb

I have never been overweight but I've gained about seven pounds in the last two years I would like to lose (5'10 and weigh 137ish). Is it healthy to have my weight loss goal set at a pound a week? Or would a half a pound be more appropriate? Thanks!

  • Losing one pound a week is fine. The most you should lose in a week is two pounds.

With so little to lose 1 lb a week is too ambitious. Aim for .5 lb/wk. Good luck!

Disagree. You probably should aim to lose a half pound a week, not one pound. You're close enough to your goal weight that you want to take it slow and you might even consider lifting instead of actually losing weight. Lifting will make your body look smaller and more compact.

Losing weight when you don't have much to lose is hard, I should know, I've been trying for a while to lose these last few. I would aim for 1 lb/week to start, but be sure to eat all your exercise calories that MFP gives you. Your body doesn't have a ton of fat to use for fuel, and it really really doesn't want to use it. If you stall with that, try .5 pounds/week.

If you feel stuck, try looking for the group In Place of a Road Map. It really helped me out!

You are already at a healthy weight and moving towards the lower end of the healthy range. A 0.5 lbs/week loss would be best in your case.
  • Okay, thanks everyone, that helped a lot! I have been making a point to net at least my BMR but the 1 lb/ week calculation MFP provided was only about twenty calories over that, which seemed dangerously close to me, so I always went a little over anyway.

I know my weight is already in the healthy range; I really started MFP to try to normalize my eating habits and balance my diet more so .5 lb/ week seems more reasonable and healthy to me.
