increasing your lean body mass; pretty much everything else is bro-science.

Start lifting heavy things.
Each pound of muscle burns an additional 6 calories per day. Everything else in this thread is bs, especially about frequent meals/meal timing. Short fasts (12-72 hours) can actually increase metabolic rate.
I agree with all this, too.0 -

Listen to this, and only this. Every other thing I've read in this thread is a myth from a Cosmo magazine.
I knew you were a Cosmo reader. Do you eat Dreamy Clusters while reading it?0 -
I now want brownies and skinny cow snacks thanks guys lol0

...Well it's not really BS is it. You'll never find conclusive and absolute evidence suggesting one sole way to increase it. The metabolism is a mystic creature sometimes. There's a lot of evidence to suggest fasting is the last thing you should do, but I wouldn't call it BS.

If needed, I can provide links about how fasting increases metabolic rate.
Tis true---but it should be emphasized that it needs to be SHORT fasts. As you say, 12 to 72 hours. But the 72 hours would be at the far end and most people would not be helped by that long a fast. 24 hours would likely be the the point where the benefits are outweighed by the deleterious effects, for most people.0 -
*fine, I'll behave.

Ah... so many experts, so little time
ha.
I know that when I'm really genuinely "good" about eating clean and in moderation and lifting 2-3x/week and doing cardio 2-3x/week I see results. Since you mentioned age-related metabo-loss, maybe try adding soy protein (not isolated soy protein found in soymilk and protein powder, but like edamame or tofu - the real stuff). But, I'm not an expert, I can only suggest what makes me feel best.
Good luck!0 -

I will search the forum but in case I don't find much (which I doubt) what kind of fasting is suggested? Juice fast (well it'd be smoothies since I don't have a juicer) or just plain old water for 24 hours?

no such thing as a slow or fast metabolism...weight training and eating and having fun doing it!!0

Hey,
The best thing (or so I have read and am currently doing) is to eat within 1 hour of waking up. This time frame gets me nicely to my desk at work in time for a metabolic-boosting breakfast. Others will eat other things, and I'm sure if I had more time I would make more effort, but I start my day with either a handful of raw cashews and a banana, or two hard boiled eggs. Chase this with a black coffee, and a glass of ice water with lemon. The just have a snack every 2 hours or so. Water is an understated resource for diets, the more the better, and adding a few drops of lemon juice will only help matters.

Peppers, black pepper, green tea.caffeine is good.
also heard that eating chilli nd spicy food can make your metabolism improve.no such thing as a slow or fast metabolism...0 -
Eat a sh*tload and workout a sh*tload at high intensity. It might not actually increase your metabolism but it will feel like it.0

Wow, aggressive. I'm simply saying that when it comes to nutrition, it's much like religion. Everyone thinks their way is right, and everyone has their own evidence to suggest they are right, but doesn't mean they are! It's great you've found the way that works best for you, but if I were asking the question, I'd want a few suggestions to look into.0

Agree with most of what you're saying but this. I do believe caffeine does help increasing TDEE somewhat:
http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/research-review/coffee-diabetes-and-weight-control-research-review.html
(for the TL;DR crowd)Next up, the paper looked at the impact of caffeine on thermogenesis (calorie burning) and lipolysis (fat mobilization). It comments that a habitual caffeine of 600 mg/day (~6 strong cups of coffee) could lead to an extra caloric expenditure of 100 cal/day (equivalent to walking about 1 mile for a 150 lb person). This effect also occurs with ground and instant coffee, but not decaf so the effect is probably mediated via the caffeine itself. Do note that the body can develop tolerance to these effects so any effect might not be very long lasting.
Not really enough to make a huge difference, but it does have a small impact. The other stuff is crap though.0 -
All these suggestions are great! I've heard that one tsp of yellow mustard will kick start your metabolism, so I've been trying it out and it seems to be working well0

The C in ECA is for caffeine.
It's definitely not false (although it's doesn't work on the scale I imagine people think).0 -
Turn your underwear around and walk backwards into a door!
Not really, but that will work as much as all the bro-science on here!
justsomerandomgirl has it right as well as sarauk2sf.
Research and yes lift heavy stuff!!
Good luck to you:flowerforyou:0 -

Meal timing and frequency is complete bro-science and totally BS! Trust me I was eating and living this mantra for the longest time until I started reading up on the premise of 'If It Fits Your Macros' (IIFYM) and the importance of eating for your goals - whether a surplus to gain weight/size or for a deficit to lose weight/fat.
You could have 3 meals a day - breakfast, lunch and dinner for example and as long you meet your daily caloric number it will be the exact same thing as if you had 6 meals for that same number.0 -
Lift heavy!
(easier said than done. I know I should lift heavier and more frequent. But I still do too much cardio and too little lifting -.-)0 -
Measure your heart rate while sitting at the computer and/or watching television. Now measure it while walking around outside.
BOOM !
I just raised your metabolism 20-30%.0 -
Stand on your head for 20 minutes every morning.0

First lift heavy.
Then eat the ghost peppers.
Might have problems if you do it in the other order.
Just sayin'
^^^I can vouch for this...0 -
Lift heavy and move more. Seemples!0

ghost peppers
some people missed my sarcasm.
every other post on these forums is about how obsessed
i am about lifting, and how more people should do it, with the many benefits.
if you're having trouble drinking enough water, having a few ghost peppers might help out.
just say'n0
