Trutien is delicious, though I'm unsure of the sodium content. I'm currently using Fitness Pro, and I'm not impressed.

optimum nutrition gold standard is a very popular one, I personally don't like the way it mixes so I can't say I use it but I do like their casein to make protein balls with at night time. I get the ON casein Peanut Butter Chocolate flavor.

for a whey protein for basic drinks (mixed with ice, water and some almond milk) my personal favorite is Syntha6 chocolate cake by BSN and Gaspari MyoFusion probiotic series in chocolate.

If you are really concerned about the makeup of your protein, www.truenutrition.com lets you build your own powder mix, and you can choose from a ton of different protein sources (egg, soy, whey, rice, hemp, etc), what percentage of carbs and fats to add to the mix, and quite a large selection of flavors. Considering their customizability, the price is awesome. I got two pounds of custom mix (nothing super fancy) for just under $30 shipped. Give them a go if you want!

This is really cool! I'm going to check this out. Thanks for the tip :)

I definitely wouldn't be buying powders from walmart/GNC, they're typically VERY expensive there. Even Walmart is pretty expensive compared to online.

BB.com and smartpowders are both cheap. At either of those places you can pretty much get whatever you're looking for.

I try to keep at 4-5g or less per scoop of sugar, which can be hard to come by at with limited selections.

Another vote for Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Protein.

Extreme Milk Chocolate and Mocha Cappuccino are my faves.

Like everyone else said, the protein powder is simply a quick/easy replacement for a whole food source like chicken, eggs, etc. Generally it should be low in all other macros and high in protein. Some of the EAS stuff has more carbs and sugar than you find in other powders.

Whey protein is superior to Soy protein. Whey has what they call a higher biological value (BV) and protein efficiency ratio (PER)meaning that you actually get more of the protein from it than Soy when absorbed through the body. The levels of protein quality go in order Isolate > Concentrate > Hydrolysates. You pay more for Whey Isolate because it is 90-95% protein. However, the Isolate also removes all of the beneficial factors that improve immunity, intestinal health, and other positive overall health benefits that are found in a cheaper Concentrate (70-80% protein).

    BV Of Common Proteins
    • Whey=104
    • Whole egg=100
    • Cow milk=91
    • Egg white=88
    • Beef=80
    • Casein=77
    • Soy=74
    • Beans=49

Taste will be personal preference. Here are some options I found the other day for a friend.

I've got 4 different ones, ranging in price from $15.98 to $26.98 for a 2lb container. If you take 1 scoop EVERY day these should last about 28-32 days. Flavors and taste will vary per person, I did find an overall Taste rating on Bodybuilder.com so I included that. The Body Fortress is the worst tasting, also the cheapest.

EAS is rated at 7.6 - 8 on taste for comparison. My trainer has me taking the Syntrax Matrix, it's what she has been using for years as a bodybuilder. I think they taste pretty good, the only one I didn't like is the Perfect Chocolate, but a lot of other people like that flavor. Syntrax Matrix is a whey concentrate with a blend of different types of protein, whey, casein, egg which absorbs fast, medium, and delayed. Optimum Nutrition is very well known and used by tons of bodybuilders, so you can't go wrong with it. It is a whey isolate. GASPARI NUTRITION MyoFusion is recommended by bodybuilders too, usually it's a cheaper price, but I found the Optimum Nutrition cheaper on that site. I think any of these will work for you.

I get mine at walmart super advanced whey protein its 20 calories, 7 carbs, 26 g protein and 70 mg sodium. It comes in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. We prefer the vanilla

20 calories??? Better double-check that label.
  • I have a  horrible reaction to lactose so unfortunately I toy with Muscle Milk from time to time. Still looking for more that taste good, without lactose, and optimal nutrition.

From what I understand Whey Isolate should be nearly lactose free. You would need a good quality Isolate and not Concentrate or lower. There is also Soy Isolate, although not the same high quality as Whey it would meet your needs.

    Ark,
    I used to use EAS

Didn't realize I posted that, wasn't even close to done.

I used to use EAS and that stuff was pretty good.
Everyone raves about ON, but actually I've been really happen with SciVation's off label stuff. It's cheaper because it doesn't have the label, but it's made the same, with identical info.

I get my cancer powder from Wal-Mart of all places. The Body Fortress brand they have is surprisingly low carb, but I haven't checked the sodium. Tastes good, actually!

I also use the Body Fortress brand, Vanilla flavor, and really like it. I love the Visalys powder too but can't afford it. Well, I can, I just can't justify the cost. Plus it's a hassle trying to find someone to buy stuff like that from. I prefer to just be able to go in a store to get my stuff.
  • I LOVE Optimum Nutrition Oats & Whey. It's not super low carb but it has oats/oat fiber in it so those are good carbs and keep me full for a good long time. It also doesn't have any artificial sweeteners (it's sweetened mainly with honey powder) so that's a plus for me. I use 1/2 scoop in my morning smoothie for 100 calories, 12 grams of protein, and 2 grams of fiber. It works for me, but it might not be as low in carbs as you're looking for.

Optimum Nutrition 100% All Natural Whey in vanilla is the best around, imo. A bit pricey, I guess, but bodybuilding.com sells it for like half the price of ON's website.

That's what I use. Organic, raw, and comes only from grass-fed cows. It's not processed with acids, etc.
