P90X Doorway Pull Up

So I am starting P90X on June 13th (after I finish my 5k :)) I am considering buying the door pull up vs. doing the resistance bands only as I hear it really does make a difference...

My question is will it cause damage to my door frame? Our house is fairly new (built in '05) but the door trims well they don't look like they could hold me (and I am only about 142 lbs). I suppose the bar would hopefully spread my weight out over the entire frame. Have you had any experience with these braking your doors? Also my fiance weighs around 190 and he would be using it too.

Also, should we get one or two? We would prefer to do the workouts simultaneously and it would seem counter productive to pause the DVD or whatever for us to switch off...

And! Which ones have you tried and did you like them? I could get the basic one with no extras for cheap or is it worth it to spend a little more and get the one they have designed for the series?

I bought the doorway pull up and I weigh ~ 155 or so. It can hold me up and the doorway doesn't creak at all. I was worried about the doorway too but it seems very sturdy. I haven't heard any cracking. ( I live in an apartment. and it's not that new) Hope I helped!

I have the cheapo gold's gym one. I think it was $19.00. It works fine. There are two of us doing it and it's no big deal to stop the DVD to bust out some pull ups.

It depends on the door frame that you have but ours has been fine. You can always return it if it doesn't work out so I think the best thing would be to try it for yourself and see what happens.

I have one, it wraps over the top of the doorway (at the top and is supported above the doorway on the other side. Then there are two 'legs' that rest on the doorway (on the trim area for me). I used some litttle round furniture pads (the rubber ones) and put under these little legs to prevent damage to the door trim. Works like a charm.

You need to make sure of two things: 1) that you have room on both sides of the doorway for the bar to extend (where you put your hands) and 2) that you have ample head room above the bar for when you lift yourself up (you don't want to hit your head on the ceiling every time).

I love mine. Oh I use the bands as well in another location in the house. plus you can use the bands for other exercises too.

  • I've been doing P90X as well and use this type of pull up bar in my door frame (http://www.extremebodyworkout.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/p90x-chin-up-bar-i.jpg). I'm about the same weight as you so it'll definitely hold your weight, and I was assured by the manager at the fitness store i bought it from that they're designed to hold a lot of weight and that "there's no way this thing is coming down." As for your particular situation with your questionable door frame, well ... I guess it'll be a trial and error kind of thing, but I wouldn't let it stop you and your partner from using it. I've found that by doing the wide pull ups, the bar has created a tiny nick on the vertical portion of the frame just due to pressure from the bar. Otherwise there's been no damage.

    Good luck!
