Do you train your lower back as an isolated area? If so I'd love some suggestions on a few exercises (note: i already do lots of core work, compound movements and stretches) - wondering if there is one or two I can add into my mix as I don't feel its nearly as strong as it could be and noticing it most when doing deadlifts.

Thanks :)

Hey there. The absolute best lower back exercise that I know of are back bridges. You don't necessarily have to do a full bridge. If you bridge up on your shoulders arching your back and focus on flexing the back muscles rather then pushing with the legs, your lower back gets a great workout.

when i was lifting more often, i would do good mornings, weighted hyper extensions, and pendlay rows to help strength my lower back. this really helped with having good form and increased strength on my squats and dead lifts. it has also made running and cycling easier and more tolerable because those smaller muscles are much stronger now.

Dead lifts have really strengthened up my back.

Seated good mornings. Sitting takes your glutes and hamstrings out of the picture. Deadlifts and front squats are good too.

Another one you can add in is reverse hyper extensions. If you have a swiss ball and bench you can do these.

Thanks all I appreciate it. I do squats and deadlifts now....but i've had pretty poor posture for awhile (mostly desk job and driving/commuting to work). i am more conscious now of sitting up right and using core to help that but def during deads i notice that i need more work in lower back :)
