walking/running/intervalling with pets

So, I tend to walk/run/interval with my dog, who is a big boy (70lb lab mix). When we're on mile 2 and his tough is lolling out the side of his face, I know he's thirsty. I don't often carry water on my for a 1-3 mile walk/run as I am fine w/out it (unless it's the middle of summer - I overheat fast).
But I know my boy is thirsty....
So, here's my question. Do any of you out there have a hydration belt that you use for you and your 4-legged running companion? I was thinking of getting one to have a bottle for me and for him... but I'm reluctant because it's... silly. The problem is, I don't have the "hand space" to carry a palm bottle, between the leash in one hand and needing my other hand free to grab the leash if needed, I don't want to get bogged down in my hands. Also, I feel weird about getting one because I want to keep my supplies low - I already deal w/the dog, his leash, and my ipod when we go out, and when I go to a 5k, I carry a bag across my back w/all his/my stuff in it.
So how do I cut back on the "stuff" i carry during a 5k, but make sure that my personal items are secure? And, how do I make sure my dog stays healthy and hydrated on a long walk w/out weigh myself down.
Somehow, this turned into two questions. :blushing:
