Does anyone know/take hemp protein powder?
To my knowledge despite making it here in Australia, I don't think its commercially availaible, but that should change soon.
Has anyone read any scientific evidence for hemp powder? I've seen articles and advertising with some facts, but dont at the moment have the time to do a thourough research search.
If the claims they make about it are true, it would be a very useful ingredient for me.
so any solid information would be great guys.
Also if people in Australia know if they have legalised it for sale and where we could get it that would be rad.

I tried it and the kind I had you're just supposed to mix with water. I added it to my smoothies.
Bottom line... it was NASTY! It didn't dissolve all the way so it was horribly gritty, it tasted funky, and it made my smoothie taste bad. I tried it just dissolved in water on it's own and it was bad. Milk, same thing. Hot water, nothing. I returned it to Trader Joe's and started buying vanilla flavored protein shakes so I don't have to worry about mixes and grittyness.0 -
Hemp protein powder is usually just hemp seeds ground up. You can get hemp seeds for much cheaper (2.99/lb) than buying the powder ($20/lb) and grind it yourself in a coffee grinder or mill in a soymilk machine. This will also keep more of the nutrients in. Or you can just throw them in whole. I will put the seeds on salad or eat them straight. They taste a bit nutty and I really like them

If you're after vegan protein supplements, I found two at my local health food shop (just next to the entrance to Woollies).
One is:
Phyto Protein - pea protein isolate. Produced by Logical Nutrition, an Australian company. www.vitalgreens.com.
You can get their amino acid content (g/100g protein) from the website.
1 serve is 25g: 135 calories, 22g protein, 0.025g carbohydrate, 0.5g fibre, 0.25g fat.
Its HACCP certified (no idea what that means), 98% digestible (lots of vegan protein supposedly has lower digestibility), specifically claims to be suitable for vegans, is gluten free, GMO free, no additives, no common allergens (peanuts, eggs, soy, lactose, diary, sesame, mustard, crustaceans) and has high alkalinity level (ph7.5, don't know why you'd care about that though).
Bottom line, it must be really really healthy, because it tastes like *kitten*. I put it in chocolate flavoured soy milk and that's quite yum, but the soy milk has 22g carbs! hahahaha.
The other one, is:
Nature's Way - Instant Natural Protein (chocolate flavour). Yum. I alternate between the two and really look forward to this one.
serving: 30g, 115 calories, 22.5g protein, 1.3g fat, 3.9g carbs. Its made from soy protein, fructose, cocoa, flavour, and sweetener.
www.naturesway.com.au
There were a few others at my health food shop, but I thought two would be enough for an initial purchase.
Hope that helps!0 -
No wonder the natures way tastes, better its soy protein (which is sorta taste neutral) bit im trying to slighlty avoid processed soy just cause. And fructose + sweetener haha
The other one sounds interesting if slightly. I'm going to have to go for another foray into my health food shop. Which could be intersting last time i ended up with spirulina powder. Most disgusting thing on earth!!!
Question about the pea isolate does it smell?? I can probably deal with tasting nasty if it doesn't smell.
Yeah I'm sorta looking for a protein supplement/ something I can make into a protable meal, cause I'm out of the house for 12-14 hours at a time and I'm SO over lugging round tonnes of food, cause im both poor, dieting and vegan. Well I'm assuming you know how it is being in a similar situation haha.
So thanks for the suggestions0 -
It doesn't smell, its just a bit gluggy. I might be doing it wrong though. You could ask the staff at the shop if you find it. Its drinkable either in normal soy milk or just with water. I haven't tried in boiling water yet, that might dissolve it a bit better. Add in some berries or something and it may even turn out really well, I'm just kinda lazy at the moment when it comes to working this stuff out.0
