I've been going to the gym for a few months now and have seen a differnce in some places

(I am less out of breath, wheezing's pretty much stopped, I can walk for longer distances without getting tired out, I am relatively alert first thing in the morning, my butt seems perkier, the sleeves on some of my short sleeved tops are feeling slightly looser)

but I can't see much difference around my middle! My stomach and waist have always been my problem - even when I was thin I was still a little chunky round the middle. I know I should do more cardio (would walking count?), but most of the exercise I have been doing has been toning - Power Plate and Callanetics pretty much.

What are the best exercises to do for abs and waist, preferably would like to see results fast!

The secret to abs is cardio, cardio, cardio.

Your abs are already there but are surrounded by fat. Our bodies store fat in many places but the stomach always seems to be the last place it goes and is also the place your body will fight the hardest against losing.

I'm so close and I can feel them just under the last remaining bit of fat in my body. I have years of abuse so this last pound of fat is taking a long time to shift but I know I will get there with healthy eating and lots more cardio

By cardio, would something like walking or hillwalking (hiking) be good, or more something like running or machines at the gym>

Running is very good if you do intensity running (short bursts of running flat out followed by jog/slow run). You can do this on a treadmill but it isn't as good because it takes a few seconds to get up to sprint speed and what you're really looking for is instant sprints.

An Elliptical trainer is also good as you can instantly switch to sprinting and I personally prefer the Elliptical for intensity work-outs as it is so much quicker increasing and decreasing speeds. I also tend to go a LOT faster for longer on the Elliptical so I build my endurance quicker.

If you get heart rate monitor you will see which exercises really push you and you can then also control the heart rate zone to maximize the workout.
