Is anyone here a green thumb? I would like your ideas.

I have a rectangular shaped patch of dirt in my front yard between the grass and front porch and would like to plant something there. Preferably something that lasts year round and is not very common.

Does anyone have any ideas?

it all depends on the climate you're in really. Ummm look up the best plants for your area, like since I'm in florida, I can grow pineapples and lime trees. Bromiliads and cacti are good and easy too.

Maybe start with what kind of shrubs or flowers you like, what kind of soil is it (any clay, etc., in it?), and how much sun exposure does that space get? http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/

I live in Denver where the weather varies a lot. Just recently we got several inches of snow and by the next day it was all melted away! My soil is clay, not sandy.

I really don't think palm trees would work because of size. They would be too close to the house and because of neighborhood covenants I'm pretty sure I'd be asked to get rid of them. Plus that would be very expensive.

Have a walk around your neighbourhood and check out other peoples gardens. You can see both what works in terms of structure, and also what will grow well - or not- in your soil and climate.

Most people where I live don't have gardens. Just lawns.

It says I'm at Zone 5b : -15 to -10 (F) Also that space faces east so it actually gets quite a bit of sun.

You probably want something you don't have to water often.

Thanks for all the replies. I might just have to pick something out from one of those links.
