Red Meat?

Main Q: [How often] Can I eat red meat?

Context: I'm at 117, 5'2", heading on down to 110. I am going some pretty intense weight training, running, and cycling. I want to be a pretty strong (dare I say ripped?) 100. Is there room for a bit of red meat in my diet? I ask because (A) my trainer says no, or only for a one-off cheat meal but (2) I have a killer beef stew recipe that I want to use for lunches 2-3 times a week

Of course you can. I think a bias towards red meat shouldn't be confused with nutrition or weight training.

Probably. Unless you're on some stupid low calorie goal such that you don't have room for the protein and fat, I think red meat is great. It's a staple in my diet.

On a side note, your trainer is trained in training, right? Does he/she know anything about nutrition? I'm guessing not...

Why would your trainer say no? Did he give you reason?

Mehhh, not rrreally - He said something vague about it not being lean enough, about sticking to chicken and turkey only. He doesn't eat red meat.

Ha, I'm not sure he's trained in nutrition at all. The more I learn here, the more it contradicts what he's told me. He's convinced eating 1500/day will cause me to gain weight (a belief that kept me eating at 1000-1200 for a long while), but since upping my intake I'm still losing, and feeling great :)

    Thanks guys!

You can get lean cuts of beef as well, and fat isn't the boogeyman it's made out to be sometimes. Healthy amounts of fat are perfectly okay, just try to make sure most of them are healthy fats.

    THIS^^^
Omg, especially saturated fat! While, yes, too much saturated fat IS bad. Keyword: TOO MUCH
Saturated fats are needed for the formation of cell membranes and it makes your skin and hair healthy.

I haven't had red meat in about 5 years it's too hard on my digestive system. I find it's easier to stay lean without it. I also find it repulsive... but that's me!

Lean cuts of beef are fine for weight loss. IMO and from my own experiences red meat rich diets are harder to shred the weight. Meats like white meat chicken or fish are better suited for that but one should never ignore beef.

Unless someone has an ethical reason for not eating redmeat, I automatically put anyone that tells me it is bad into my "dumb@ss" category.

This is what you should've done when he told you to stop eating red meat:

And then you should've said this:

Red meat is great. I go for leaner cuts these days, but it's still a solid part of my diet (though I definitely eat less of it than I used to).

2-3 times a week is fine if it's grass fed, pastured beef.

otherwise I'd cut it down a lot more than that. traditionally raised beef (ain't it funny that feedlots are now "traditional") is the kind that gets the bad rap - and rightfully so.

you need a new trainer, OR you need to simply ignore his nutritional advice. dude's clueless.

Oh boy...here we go...the Paleo crazies are comming.....

    **runs away from thread**

Not everyone can afford $15 a pound meat. I will stick with my traditionally raised beef, thank you very much.

    1) i'm not a paleo crazy. i eat potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, kefir, etc, etc

    2) I'm a broke actor living in NYC, it's not $15/pound unless you're getting premium cuts. but if you're ok with making beef stew using stew meat, it's totally affordable and tasty.

and sticking with traditionally raised beef with all the hormones and antibiotics is your choice!
