How often should I weigh-in?

I've been all over the place with this. Sometimes I'll do it once a week, sometimes daily and sometimes I don't even want to look at the scale.
What is the best way?

once a week in the morning0

Once a week is fine. Always in the morning after you use the restroom. I weigh myself every day though, write it down and move on.0

Whatever you can handle mentally! I am a big fan of weighing daily so you can learn from the inevitable swings but if seeing 1-2 pounds up one day will freak you out then go to once a week or so. Either way, make it a consistent time, preferably first thing after waking and taking a wee. If you choose daily I recommend charting with one of the many apps available to chart trends. PM me if you need one.0

I didn't weigh myself for the first 6 mos. I also didn't count calories. I did start a food journal though or rather a regular journal that became a food journal. Because of that I did become more calorie/nutrition aware. So now I can only estimate what I lost, I am pretty sure that 30 lbs prior to MFP Is accurate though based on what my likely BMR is and a few days of back counting what I was consuming in those six months, and based on what size I couldn't fit in October and what size I can fit into now.
So anyway. The point is you can lose without a scale, you can lose without counting calories. But, it's probably better to have a scale and weigh as much as you need to to track what is working and what isn't. And counting calories is a good thing too as I have started losing faster now with the MFP tools.
Verdict: Weigh at least once a week and weigh 3 times a day if you feel like it. Whatever works for you.0 -
I like to call it checking in because even if the scale doesn't change it doesn't mean you haven't! I CHECK IN once a week and take photos once every other week.0

One of the "diets" mom and I followed for a while was the "Carb Addict's Diet" which said to weight daily, but then take the weekly AVERAGE to show the actual weight loss because the daily weigh ins would fluctuate. With that said, I DO weigh in daily, but I only use my "weigh in" day's actual number when I update my ticker. (Mostly because I've been trying to slow down a landslide weight loss!)0

I can't stay away from the scale, weigh myself every day but I only log it once a week. Don't stress it, there's no "wrong answer"0

SteelySu nshine---we're twins!! :flowerforyou:
I also went several months without weighing myself or counting calories - and I kept a journal.
I just did my best to make good choices and control portion sizes.
I was amazed when I went to a doctor's appointment and discovered I lost just about 50 pounds!! :smokin:
I discovered MFP and now log calories -- seems a bit more stressful, but I can't seem to let go.
I weigh once a month at the nutritionist's office.0 -
I do daily and have an app that tracks the trend. I like data and I don't get depressed by the number if up.0

As many have said, there is no right or wrong way, the once a week method is more geared to those who feel they will get discouraged easily while some feel they can do once a day because it helps them keep accountable for themselves. Thats my reason. I weigh myself once a day in the morning when I first wake up.0

Can you share the name of the app you are using please?0 -
I don't know the boards rules on this but since it's free I guess it's ok. I use Libra. Love it.0

Love this! Definitely going to try to think like this : )0 -
I agree, scales suck, they only tell you how much you WEIGH, as in how much water your skin is holding, how much food you haven't evacuated yet, and how much your bones and fat weigh.
As you lose weight, fatty acids are constantly moving in and out of your fat cells. As you spend more calories each day than you eat, you lose fatty acids in your fat cells, but they are replaced with water, in the vain hopes that the fatty acids will one day return from their hiatus...
which is why we see wooshes on the scale, at some point, we lose the fat-cell-place-holding water.0 -
I go several weeks at a time.0

i weigh daily... but thats because for me its a great motivator, it helps to keep me in check and on track
ive been out of balance and out of control for long enough , so devices groups and gadgets help me
that said if you beat yourself up over tiny wins and losses, then everyday might not be the best for you0 -
Weigh every day, but only take action on what you see once a week or even less than that. It makes it much easier to see the overall trend. If you weigh once a week you risk having a day that isn't reflective of your overall progress and making the wrong choices based on that.0

I weigh every day in order to see patterns in my fluctuations but only log once a week.0

I've been weighing in on average once a week because i'm doing an 8 week challenge at work. Once this is over i'll weigh myself every 2+ weeks.0

I weigh multiple times a day...crazy, I know, but it helps me stay on track. I still eat my favorite foods, just smaller portions & more fruits/veggies for sure! Weighing everyday is definitely motivating to me. I neglected weighing myself for many years, just because I didn't want to see weight gain. I only record weight loss & am not discouraged for the 1 or 2 lb gains during a week.0
