SERIOUS knee pain

I've been running 3x a week for a few months now, I'm still slow and don't have that much endurance, but it's better than nothing. On my last run I noticed that my knee was twinging, 2 days later and it's in agony, to the point where I couldn't sleep and can't walk particularly happily. I know arthritis runs in my family, though according to the doctor I don't suffer from this particular problem (my knee begs to differ). I've had knee pains before, and they've gone within a few days or weeks, so I'm hoping that's what's happening here. Until then, does anyone have any advice or comments about what I could do to speed recovery? I really don't want to lose my running habits, or current fitness, so is there any other exercises I could be doing during this time?
