rule of thumb for pizza

Does anyone have a rule of thumb they use for pizza bought at a regular local pizzeria? Since all pizza shops vary to a degree, I'm trying to figure out the average calories (and fat) for a single slice of plain pizza with red sauce. Or for white pizza with broccoli. Is there a good way to figure that one out?

unless the restaurant advertises their nutrition information I merely do a search for pizza... size and toppings... Go with your gut on it (no pun intended) but don't cheat yourself. Choose the highest one if you think that feels right.

    I bought pizza tonight :drinker:
I just had to estimate calories.... chose one that sounded similar to what I had toppings and size wise. You can't get everything exact

A plain cheese, thin-crust slice of pizza is, on average, about 250 - 350 calories apiece. Deep dish, pan crust, cheese stuffed and toppings may add more.

300ish a piece - if its a local pizza joint not in the database I usually pick something as close as I can in the data base - basic types I use pizza hut or something. The broccoli one might be harder to find though - maybe do a white pizza and add the broccoli separate if you can't find one.

if you want to be a little crazy about it...
next time you go to your local pizzeria (the one you go to), buy an extra slice.

take it home and dissect it. do your best to weigh the crust, the cheese, the sauce, and any individual toppings. and... the grease if you go to a place that has drippy pizza..

then research the cal intake for those things at the given weight. and now... you have a decent estimate for your piece of pizza every time you get it. obviously, only works if you're loyal to a place.

no, i've never done this. but i wouldn't put it past myself.
  • I try to find a similar chain pizza in the food database to compare it to, mainly depending on the crust (thin, traditional, deep dish, or pan) and then looking at toppings. I add whatever one feels correct. I also would rather over-estimate it a bit when I enter it in my food diary.

I did this with a meal from a Chinese restaurant recently. I did my best to eat half of the food and took the other half home so I could weigh the rice, veggies, tofu, etc. It was really helpful.

Bout 300-400 calories a slice. Normally I'll get Veggies or Chicken for a protein boost.

If the pizza slice is thicker than your thumb, it's illegal to beat your wife with it.

If it's a local place that you go to fairly often you could try asking them. They may not know, but might be willing to figure it out for you.

Well, I ran a little experiment where I ate nothing but pizza for a week. One slice in the morning, a slice at lunch, and 3 slices at dinnet (I prefer a large meal at night). Thats 5 slices of drippy, greasy, melty, delicious pizza. So I lost exactly 2lbs that week. I did not exercise beyond 33 hours of retail work (cashier, using an automatic sweeping machine, moving merchandise to better locations, some stocking, standing around talking to customers about how to care for their purchases).

So it takes ~3500 calories to burn a pound. ×2 is 7000 calories. So that means I managed to run at a deficit of 1000 calories a day. Lets say that retail work burns calories like exercise. Lets say it averages 60 calories an hour (I didnt pull that number out of my butt, I calculated it using comparative exercises). Thats 1980 calories for the week. So thats a food deficit without the exercise of 5020. 717 calorie deficit a day. So my tdee when im not working is about 1900 calories because I lay down with the tv a lot. Thats 1183 calories with of pizza. Divide that by 5 slices and you get 236 calories a slice.
