is oatmeal twice a day too much?

I already have steel cut oats for breakfast.

I'm developing a lunch smoothie to replace the pre-packaged one I currently use. I've been making/buying smoothies for decades, and generally bounce between making my own and using powders.

For 'thickness', I'd prefer to use rolled oats over something like banana. (I find bananas are just too annoying over time, stinking up my freezer and/or not ripening on time, being wildly different sizes, etc).

My breakfast is made with 1/4 cup of steel cut oats.

Is there any issue with then having 1/4 cup of rolled oats with lunch?

And if there is... anyone have any suggestions for something else (besides banana) to use as the base? This will ultimately be a chocolate smoothie (by cocoa powder or nibs or both).

ps - yogurt isn't an option. avoiding dairy, but also simply need to keep cost down.

I'd consider having egg whites or Greek Yogurt for breakfast if you want to use the Oats in your smoothie. That's my two cents, I'm sure others will feel differently.

(My first choice would actually be Shakeology, but it's out of my price range and I'm trying to go on a financial budget).

1/4 oats with lunch? Of course there's nothing wrong with that, they're good carbs. As long as it fits your macros why not?

I wouldn't see anything wrong with it if it's what I wanted to eat. If you're meeting your other macros, then there shouldn't be an issue.
  • 1/4 cup isn't much. Total of 1/2 cup oats each day. Go for it.

There are way worse things you could be overeating than oatmeal. If you like it, enjoy it.

I never knew someone would think one could have 'too much ' oatmeal. If it fits your goals for the day. I love oatmeal. I normally eat a bowl at work with peanut butter and throw in 1/4 cup in my smoothies too, normally I only put it in the smoothie if I am doubling it as a meal (I workout right before bed at 11AM)

I haven't done any macro analysis of my diet yet. Probably should, but i only just found this site and figured out my TDEE, etc.

yea, i wasn't sure. it's such a heavy food i thought it might be problematic but after posting here I did some more googling and it looks like up to a cup a day is quite healthy and some doing strength training go up to 2 cups a day. so... yea, my health concerns are alleviated.

now i just need to sort out the rest of the ingredients for my chocolate smoothie.

    thanks all!

    I fit helps any...

I use chocolate whey protein, pb2, 1/4 cup of oats and if youd like you can add Raspberrys (without the pb2) or jello sugar/fatfree pudding mix..banana cream, pistachio, butterscotch... mmm.

ETA, I use almond milk and a few ice cubes too ;)

never had PB2 before, but just looked it up and it sounds potentially super tasty. i'm trying to remove whey from my diet, but i'll just replace with some other protein powder (pea or rice, most likely).

i'll be losing some of the random assortment of vitamins included in my current powder, but as i already take some multis and assorted other vitamins (not to mention eat lots of greens, etc) i probably don't need them anyway.

Doesnt matter what carb sources you eat as long as you stay under your Macro setting for carbs.

assuming i can trust mfp's recommendations, i've easily got room for 1/4 cup rolled oats in the carbs column. thanks!

How about oat bran, quinoa, or quinoa flakes?

oat bran is a definite possibility. i live near Bob's Red Mill, so can pretty much get any type of oat in existence. i only picked rolled because for texture, but really, it's not that big of deal.

many years ago i used to soak groats overnight for my lunch smoothie. so... yea, everything is on the table.

though i do associate quinoa with dinner, not really chocolate smoothies... but hey, maybe it works.
