Lower back spasms are KILLER

Hi all. I'd love your input and help if you've experienced this. Two days ago I had slight back pain on lower right side -- started strangely when I was doing something in the kitchen. No big deal, though, and I went to gym as usual: walked, ran, lifted. No pain at the gym.
Yesterday the spasm started. Same location on my back. Muscle locks into a wickedly painful state that typically results in me freezing, groaning, and staring into space. It's really nice. T'was also Mother's Day, and my children thought I had been possessed. Now we're on day two of the ouch, and I'm physically and emotionally exhausted.
My mother-in-law brought a muscle relaxer. I tried that. Nothing. Iced it, which did give some relief briefly. Heat also gives a modicum of relief. Last night was pure hell, though, and today I'm skipping work in favor of heating pad and the couch.
I'm in decent shape but am fairly new to working out again. I yoga, weight lift and cardio. I fear, though, that this is largely a result of a weak core. Other than going to the chiropractor today, any insight or thoughts? Would love to get some seasoned advice.
