Endurance exercises?

I really am not the best at running and want to change that. I am rather short, just slightly over 5 foot so my legs aren't the longest thing to exist. And after competing with other people, I ran 100 meters in 23 seconds, most definitely not very fast. I ran 1500 meters in around 11 minutes and 45 seconds. I think one of the things that really put me off during the sprint is that I didn't know the people and they were meters ahead of me so basically I hung back.
What I want to be able to do is to work on my speed and endurance at home, not reallu in the outdoor world because I don't have enough time. Are there any workouts or exercises that can really improve the speed in which I run at, because I feel as if people think I'm a laugh at these runs.

60/120's. It's an outdoor world thing but you sprint flat out for 60 seconds and walk for 2 minutes... rinse and repeat. Try this for 20 minutes and increase the time the better your endurance builds. Some strength exercises will help. Try runnersworld.com for some good suggestions. Also, as far as indoors, try mountain climbers and other high intensity stuff like burpees.
